RCWG Charter • Provide insight and requirements from DoE community to ECS for usage, problems and planning of services • Provide organized testing, roll-out and feedback of new or revised services • Provide an information exchange on new products and developments S. RCWG Description • Twenty-two members ~ half actively participate • Small number are “real” users not IT professionals • Use ECS and collaborative tools for weekly meetings • RCWG members offer to their sites and/or the conferencing community • operational support (room, desktop, phone) • run services such as streaming and VRVS • collaboration technology investigations (but not necessarily primary job responsibility) S. RCWG Brief History • Formed in early 1990s from the Energy Research Video Network (ERVN) Pilot Project • Past chairs Kipp Kippenhan, FNAL/HEPNRC and Ed May, ANL • Current chair is Sheila Cisko FNAL • Founding members included: ESnet, FNAL, SSC, SLAC, BNL, LBNL, ANL, LAL, CERN and DESY S. Current Activities • Weekly meetings use ESnet technology • Alternate between general topics and technical discussions • Include guest speakers and member presentations • Agenda and minutes distributed via email and wiki • Participation in ECS 2004-2005 Workshops • Continued technology tests • H239 (parallel presentations and video) • Instant Messaging • recording and archiving of meetings • SIP protocol • interoperability • VRVS service • Open Source H.323 clients S. Future RCWG activities • Conduct community survey targeting US laboratories and universities • include users, IT professionals, support staff • Continue interaction with other services for interoperability and R&D efforts • Plan for deployment of future ECS services • Improve advertisement of ECS services and notification of technology changes S. Future RCWG activities cont’d • Broaden community’s knowledge • by monitoring devices and components at users’ site • by improving online documentation and instructions • by offering tutorials – live using ECS services and live or archived streaming • Widen membership to include other D.O.E. sites and university affiliates S. Observations • ECS vital statistics • H323 • 1000+ registered endpoints • More registered desktops than room-based systems • Average of 4500 hrs/month of H323 MCU use • Voice/Data • 381 registered users • Average of 1950 hr/month of Voice MCU use • Average of 200 hrs/month of Data Collaboration • Technology is changing rapidly • SIP? Observations continued • HEP collaborations are getting larger, more geographically spread out and are taking longer to complete (LHC ILC) • We are seeing more multidiscipline collaborations, like GLAST • We must expand our interoperability with other services and initiatives (ViDeNET VRVS Access Grid) • To do this we need • people to develop and test open systems • funds to maintained and expand current services S.
