  1. Frequent Assessment:A Key to Retention Garrett Gregor (a.k.a. G2) Clark College Vancouver, WA Session T1B

Past Assessment Method (2002-2006) • HW 20%, Quizzes 10%, 3 Exams 15% each, Final Exam 25% • 80% of grade is in-class, examination assessment (no notes). • 5-7 Quizzes: 10 minutes long, were given randomly during the term, and cover the previous two days of work • Each exam covered three weeks of material.

  3. New Assessment Method (2006-2009) • HW 15%, Quizzes 40%, Midterm 20%, Final Exam 25% • 85% in-class assessment, no notes. • Nine quizzes, given every Friday, covers the material from the previous Friday through Thursday. • Quizzes are 15-25 minutes long. • No quiz given on the week of the midterm.

  4. Defining Retention and Success • Students who withdraw from the class can do so anytime up to the end of the 7th week. Students who withdraw from the 10th day to the end of the 7th week receive a W on their transcript. • Retention Rate: The percentage of students who did not withdraw from the 10th day of class to the end of the 7th week. • Pass Rate: Percentage of students who got a C or better (grade > 73%) out of those students who did not withdraw from the class.

  5. Assumptions • G2 effectiveness as an instructor has been unchanged. • The academic abilities of students have not changed.
