Ethnography study: people • Children like to play with gas knobs • Jan-dec 2011, 500 fires caused by unattended cooking fires (source: SCDF) • Total 1050 accidents caused by gas fires • Inhalation of cooking gas (even once) causes health problems • height of a child aged (2-4) is around 85.1 cm to 100.1 cm

Ethnography study:environment • Kitchens are the main environment around stoves. • Stoves can get oily, or be exposed to water • Stoves are exposed to large amounts of heat • Stoves operate near fire • Most people require convenience in kitchens • There is a lot of objects in a kitchen • Little space for placing items

Needs from ethnography study there is a need: • to prevent children from turning on the gas • to prevent making the gas knob easy to turn on for children • to ensure the material is made of fire-proof materials • for the material to resist cooking oils and dirt • for convenience in operating for parents • for simplicity in the design • to fit the knobs in the market • To fit multiple knobs

  12. Design statement • To design a device which prevents toddlers from turning on the gas knob, that is easy for parents to unlock and simple to use. • Target audience: 2-4 year old children

  16. Prototype material Advantages: • Use of flame retardant polypropylene (PP) plastic • Resistant to heat, food and acids. • Cheap easy to produce Disadvantages: • not very resistant to UV light • Can decay over time

  17. Final prototype design • Medicine cap design to stop children from opening • For solid existing hobs, no use of adhesive or fastener is required for installation • The product snaps onto the gas knob

  19. Improvements • Instead of using clear plastic, we have decided to use opaque white. • Made the cap comfortable and easier to grip by adding ridges • When moving the cap, it makes a louder clicking noise so as to alert adults that child is playing with gas knob.
