Noun • “A noun, a noun is a person, place, or thing. Something you can touch (point to a noun), something you can touch (point to a noun).” • Examples: desk, book, pencil
verb • “A verb, a verb, you do it, do it, do it. A verb, a verb, you do it, do it, do it.” “I can…” • Examples: run, jump, play, sing, pose, fly, dance, hop, kick
adjective • “An adjective, an adjective describes a noun, describes a noun (arch both hands above head).” • Example: noun (shirt) adjectives to describe shirt: colorful, soft, bright, stylish, funny, pretty
Compound word • “You take a word, you take a word, you pound them together, it’s a NEW word altogether (pound fists together)!” • Example: rain + bow = rainbow • foot + ball = football
contraction • “Contraction, contraction, you shorten it up (hand motion), pound it out (hand motion), don’t forget the apostrophe!” • Example: does + not = doesn’t • (the apostrophe goes where the letter “o” was removed from “not”)
Cause & Effect • “Cause and effect is the why and the what! Cause and effect is the why and the what! (sway arms in the air) • Example: Cause (why)—I lost my homework. • Effect (what)—So…I had to sign in.
Proper noun • “It’s a proper noun darling (wave hand with a fancy wiggle)!” • Example: for super important fancy words like…Concord Elementary, Troy, Meijer, Culver’s, Wal-Mart, Mrs. Walters, Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Bengals
Common noun • “It’s just a common noun!” • Example: for words without a specific name like…cat, dog, person, book, store, place, team, friend, school, house, restaurant
synonym • “Synonym, synonym means the same(point thumbs toward each other). It means the same!” • Example: pretty and beautiful, cold and chilly, happy and glad
antonym • “Antonym, antonym means the opposite (point thumbs away from each other). Means the opposite!” • Example: hot and cold, happy and sad, tall and short, good and bad, thick and thin, hard and soft
homophone • “Homophone, homophone same sound (listen to pretend hand telephone). Same sound (repeat)! • Example: to two too, blew blue, flu flew, sew so sow, or oar, no know
