  7. Identification Variables – I • Identification variables In all files: IDPUNCH – 3 digits, identifies the key puncher 333 111 444 222 7

Identification Variables – II • Identification variables In all files: Unique ID – depending on file type IDSCHOOL – 4 digits, school questionnaire data file IDTEACH – 6 digits, teacher questionnaire data file IDSTUD – 8 digits, all student data files IDCHECK – 3 digits, in combination with unique ID Facilitates linkage between WinW3S and WinDEM with CheckSum Procedure 8

Linkage between WinW3S & WinDEM • Advantages: • Tracking form information is only entered in WinW3S • Instrument information is entered only in WinDEM • No double entry of hierarchical identification codes is necessary • No empty instruments need to be entered in WinDEM • ... is ensured by introducing the • CheckSum procedure • (WinW3S Linkcheck) Reduces mispunches, time, and costs 10

  11. CheckSum Procedure • CheckSum is created for each unique identification code (ID) • CheckSum is printed on all labels and tracking forms produced by WinW3S • WinDEM accepts unique IDs only in combination with corresponding CheckSum 11

Indicator Variables – I • Identification variables • Indicator variables In all files: CHECK01, CHECK02,…, CHECKn – 1 digit, avoid column shifts – Only entering blank space is allowed – Appear - When transition is made between ID variables and TOKEN01 variables - At the end of every odd numbered page and at the end of the questionnaire 14
