How it Started . The 18th amendment, prohibition, was supposed to lower crime. . Crime rates increased by 102 %. . Bootleggers were the main source of crime.
The Mob . With jobs scarce, many people joined the mob since it was an easy but dangerous way to make money. . The mobs main fund was bootlegging, although they made profits by gambling and prostitution. .Got away with crime by paying off government officials. . The mobs consisted of mostly immigrants.
Dean O'Banion . Leader of one of the most prolific gangs during the prohibition era. . He was able to crack opposing gangs safe's to steal their alcohol supplies. . O'Banion brought the "Tommy Gun" into Chicago. . Killed by Capone's gang. . His death is what sparked the mob wars for the following 5 years.
Al Capone .Capone was born in 1899 Brooklyn New York. . Capone was mentored by Frank Uale . Capone visited the Torro's invitation in the 1920's. . He joined Torro's and became a lieutenant of the Colosimo mob. . Capone became the leader of the Colosimo mob when Torro's was severely injured in an assassination attempt. . On February 14, 1929, the St. Valentines Day Massacre occurred.
George Bugs Moran . Enemy of the Capone gang. . He was the leader of the Northern Chicago Mob. .He was the creator of the drive by shootings.
"Seven Group" . a combined force consisting of Salvatore Lucania (Luciano), Lansky, Frank Costello, Benjamin Siegel and many more, whose combined forces generated a vast revenue of liquor sales.
Meeting of the Mobs . 1928, Joe Magliocco and Joe Profaci, two leaders of mobs in the Brooklyn area. . The meeting was to agree on an area where Brooklynn should be divided after Salvatore D'Aquila, a powerful mobster, was shot.
The F.B.I . The 1920’s were largely considered the lawless years. . J. Edgar Hoover appointed vice president of F.B.I . The F.B.I had barely any jurisdiction, made it difficult to investigate gang related crime.
