Kingdom of Egypt British Rule British gained control of Egypt in the 1800’s After violent demonstrations High Commissioner Lord Allenby declared Egypt an independent Kingdom of Egypt on Feb 28th, 1922 Kings of Egypt King Faud ruled from 1922-1936 when he died His son Farouk became king at the age of sixteen when his father died During WWII the Allied Forces used Egypt as a base of operations in the African campaigns and in the Middle East

  3. Republic of Egypt Revolution of 1952 Group of army officers overthrew King Farouk Led by Muhammad Naguib and Gen. Abdel Nasser In 1953, after a trial of civilian rule, the Free Officers created the 1953 constitution and declared Egypt a republic

Republic of Egypt Nasser’s Rule (1956-1970) General Abdel Nasser became the President in 1956 Nasser kept Egypt neutral during the Cold War but eventually sided with the Soviets While building the Aswan High Dam in 1956 Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal The US and World Bank were supposed to help fund the dam but pulled out all funding Nasser died in 1970 and the presidency was take over by Anwar Sadat

Republic of Egypt Sadat’s Rule (1970-1981) Anwar Sadat reversed many of the policies and principals of Nasserism Broke ties with the Soviets and allied with the US Initiated peace with Israel Abandoned Socialism and moved toward Democracy Camp David Accords In 1979 the accords led to the Egypt Israel Peace Treaty Sadat was assassinated in 1981 by an Islamist Jihad cell

Republic of Egypt Mubarek’s Rule After Sadat’s assassination his Vice President Hosni Mubarek inherited the presidency of Egypt During the 1990’s Mubarak’s Economic reforms brought great success to Egypt Started to have opposition from groups unhappy with his ascension to power The main opposition was the Muslim Brotherhood In Feb 2011 Mubarak resigned and fled Cairo
