Is it Really Working??? • According to the U.S. Department of Transportation: • In 2004, 14% of all drivers involved in fatal crashes were between the ages of 15 and 20. (3,620) • HOWEVER, this group represents only 6.6% of the driving population. • The #1 cause of death for 16-24 year olds is related to driving collisions.
Is it Really Working??? • Most crashes caused by teens occur between the hours of 10:00 pm and midnight. • Although young drivers do only 20% of their driving at night, 50% of their fatalities occur at night. - National Transportation Safety Board - Insurance Information Institute
Is it Really Working??? • “A study released in July 2006 found that GDL programs can reduce the incidence of fatal crashes for 16-year old drivers by an average of 11%.” • “Every evaluation of a state’s GDL system has identified crash reductions, some as high as 60%.”
So What is the Purpose??? • “A teen with a new driver’s license needs time and guidance to gain driving experience and skills in reduced-risk settings.” With the GDL System… • The introduction to driving privileges is gradual, so that new drivers can obtain sufficient instruction and driving experience.
