Project Mercury • Goals: Orbit a manned spacecraft around Earth, Investigate man’s ability to function in space and recover both man and spacecraft safely. • Freedom 7, Liberty Bell 7, Friendship 7, Aurora 7, Sigma 7, Faith 7 • Cone-shaped one man capsule
Project Gemini • Goals: To subject man and equipment to space flight up to two weeks in duration, dock with orbiting vehicles and to maneuver the docked combination by propulsion system. • Gemini I-XII • Included the first spacewalk.
The Problem • When they were flying to the moon, at a distance of 321,866 KM from Earth, one of the service module from the number two oxygen tank exploded. • A fire increased pressure beyond its nominal (1000 PSI) limit, and either the tank or the tank dome failed. • The failure also damaged the first tank or its plumbing.
