What is ‘second language acquisition’? • second: any language that is learned subsequent to the mother tongue • L2 acquisition: the way in which people learn a language other than their mother tongue, inside or outside of classroom
SLA ‘second language of acquisition’: the study of language compare with the mother tongue
What are the goals of SLA? • Describe how learner languages changes overtime: it is focus on how ability of learner to developing their communicate, because the language itself is develops.
Example: pronounciation, the learner accents change overtime. Then, how learner builds up their vocabulary and explore the learners’ ability to produce the structure of setences.
Explaining identification of the external and internal factors 1. external factor: social condition, the input that learner receive 2. internal factor: learners possess cognitive mechanism, amount of knowledge to the task of learning an L2
So, learners possess communication strategies can help them to make effective in using of their L2 knowledge. Learner are equipped with knowledge of hw language works and it helps them to learn a particular language.
example: Joan wanted Mary to help herself. pronoun ‘herself’ refers to ‘Joan’
Describing how L2 acquisition proceeds and explaining this process and why some learners seem to be better at it than others.
