Reading Workshop - Reading is taught in a reading workshop format. Reading Workshop is an extended time for students to read, think, and converse about books on a daily basis. - Students are held accountable for their reading by responding to their reading, reading logs, thinking notes, book discussions, participation in small groups and class discussions.
Reading Workshop Cont. Components of reading workshop include: • Read aloud • Mini-lessons • Silent reading (30-45 minutes daily) • Conferring with students • Small group instruction • Sharing
Reading Comprehension Skills • Reading Comprehension Skills focus for the year include: • Inference • Cause and Effect • Narrative Elements • Sequencing • Character Traits • Compare and Contrast • Morals • Identifying speaker • Functional Texts (letters, menus, schedules, etc).
Writing • Daily Grammar Lessons • Weekly spelling patterns • Cursive is used in most assignments • 6-traits writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, presentation)
Math • Math Concepts included in the year are: • Number Sense • Multiplication properties, order of operations • Adding, subtracting, comparing, ordering, breaking apart fractions, decimals, percents, number lines, and ratios • Factors and multiples • Fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division • Estimating • Rounding and estimating • Data Analysis • Data and graphs along with median, mode and range concepts • Change over time in graphs and tables and making predictions
Math Geometric Properties • Points, lines, rays, segments, angles, parallelism, perpendicularity • 2D and 3D shapes • Triangles, sides, and angles • Congruent figures (slide, rotations, reflections) • 3D shapes and corresponding nets Coordinate Geometry • Ordered pairs on a quadrant • Constructing geometric figures on a coordinate plain Measurement • Elapsed time to the minute • Metric units – length, mass, and capacity with conversions • Perimeter and area
Math Probability • Theoretical, predicting outcomes Systematic Listing and Counting • Representing all possibilities • Drawing conclusions Vertex-Edge Graphs • Creating vertex-edge maps for graphs • Construct V-EGs to represent concrete situations • Solve conflicts using V-EGs and maps Algebra • Recognize, describe, create, and extend numerical sequences using all four basis operations • Create and solve one-step equations
Science • First Quarter – Life Science (living things, plant and animal classification, ecosystems) • Second Quarter – Physical Science (Electricity and Magnetism) • Third Quarter – Earth Science (Water cycle, weather, and earth processes • Fourth Quarter – Review for AIMS testing
Social Studies • First Quarter – AZ state facts and symbols and geography • Second Quarter – AZ Civics and Government • Third Quarter – AZ and U.S. History • Fourth Quarter – AZ in World History
School Newsletters • School Newsletters as well as district lunch menus will be sent home monthly. • Additional school information is available on the school website. • JETLINK serves as a communication device for school news and updates as well. If you are not signed up for JETLINK, please let the office or I know.
Things to Bring to School Every Day • WATER BOTTLE – please send a refillable water bottle to school every day to conserve the paper use of cups. Bottles can be refilled in the classroom. • BACKPACK, SILVER FOLDER, AGENDA, and HOMEWORK

Magnificent Birthdays • Birthday treats are always welcome! • THEY MUST BE A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE like pencils, stickers, stamps, bookmarks, etc. • Celebrations will be at the end of the day.
Homework • 30-35 minutes a night • Math page - Nightly • Homework packet • Check your child’s homework and sign reading log every night • Monthly Home Projects
Classroom Discipline • Let’s Make a JETS Choice! • Blue – Everyone starts on a blue every day to remind them to make JETS choices. • Green – 1st warning – good day • Yellow – 2nd warning – okay day • Red – 3rd warning - communiqués/detention • Making good JETS choices; weekly slips • Fun Friday awarded for good behavior and completed daily work and homework • Character Education-6 pillars • JETS CHOICE – Classroom rewards
Writing Grades • Writing Grades: • Weekly Grammar Quizzes • Concept Quizzes (examples: letter format, envelope address format, etc.) • Quarterly Assessments • Writing Samples • Class work • Spelling will be graded for report cards via writing samples and proof reading samples, not weekly tests.
Reading Grades • Reading Grades: • Weekly Comprehension Tests • Weekly Comprehension Skills Tests • Class work • Reading behaviors
Math Grades • Math Grades: • Concept Quizzes • Unit Tests • Class work
Science Grades Students receive a content grade and an inquiry grade • Concept and inquiry quizzes for each unit lesson • Unit tests • Class work
Social Studies Grades Students receive a content grade ONLY during the 2nd and 4th quarters (represented as semester grades). Lessons will be taught by semester. • Unit lesson quizzes • Unit tests • Class work
AIMS • Test Date: TBA • Usually a couple of weeks after spring • break. • Mark in your calendars! Please be at school! • 2 hour – 3 hours of testing every day • 3 Sections of Reading • 3 Sections of Math • 1 Day of Science
Field Trip/Tax Credit • Our Field Trips can now only be funded using Tax Credit monies donated by families. • Anyone can donate to tax credit… even aunts and uncles. • Tax Credit forms are attached. • Single contributions up to $200. • Married contributions up to $400. • Fourth grade field trips may include the Heard Museum, the Basha Art Museum, Arizona Historical Musuem, Arizona State Capitol, a theatrical play, as well as in-house field trips.
