Problem identification • Do you have an educational pet peeve? • Is it just you or do others share your pet peeve? • What would it look like if this pet peeve were ameliorated/solved/eliminated? • How do you get to your preferred state? • Review the literature? • Talk with others? • Do a needs assessment?

Refine the problem: write a concept paper • Introduction • Background/context • Set the problem within the context • Problem statement • Causes • Target population • Need for resolution • Literature review • Major work in the area • Tested/tried solutions • Resolution strategies • Steps to take • Timeline • Responsible persons • Outcome evaluation • Measurement of effectiveness

  5. Searching for money The search • Know your organizational gatekeeper • Talk with other grantees • Meet local grantmakers • Go bigger: state and feds and/or private national foundations Pointers • Attend workshops • Read successful proposals • Submit your concept paper • Talk with “them”
