Reagan’s Campaign • With the defeat of President Ford by Jimmy Carter in 1976, Ronald Reagan began his campaign for the 1980 republican presidential nomination. He established a political action committee that collected and contributed over $600,000 to Republican candidates at all levels during the 1978 off-year elections.
Renomination • Reagan and Bush were renominated as expected on August 22, 1984 at the Republican convention in Dallas. The Democratic nominees were, Walter Mondale, former vice president under Jimmy Carter, and representative Geraldine Ferraro of New York, the first woman ever nominated by a major party. When the ballots were counted Reagan had scored an even wider margin of victory than in 1980.
Reagan’s Promise • When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979, Soviet-American relations suffered. President Reagan promised to oppose Soviet aggression during the election of 1980 and referred to the Soviet Union as an “Evil empire” after taking office.
Assassination • On March 30, 1981, Reagan, along with his press secretary James Brady and two others, was shot by a would-be assassin, John Hinckley Jr. missing Reagan’s heart by less than one inch, the bullet instead pierced his left lung. He began coughing up blood in his limousine and was rushed to George Washington University Hospital, where it was determined that his lung had collapsed; He endured emergency surgery to remove the bullet.
