2000/01 H.S. students • 74% -- admit serious test cheating. • 72% -- admit serious cheating on writing assignments. • 50% -- admit some level of plagiarism on writing assignments using the Internet. Source: Center for Academic Integrity, 2003
Does Your Community Cheat? • UVA, 45 students expelled, 3 graduate degrees revoked. • Piper H.S, Kansas: nine teachers, principal and school superintendent resign, three board members resign. • NYC, Salt Lake City, Roswell (NM), Sedalia (MO), Myrtle Beach (SC) –reporters fired for plagiarism.
Intellectual Property? • No awareness of intellectual property. • Everything on Internet is “free”. • Internet belongs to everyone.
How Does Your Institution Rate? • Honor Code a cornerstone of institution, school wide enforcement. • Plagiarism mentioned in student handbook. Penalties up to faculty. • It’s happening, but there are no penalties. • Plagiarism is a problem?
Raise Awareness • Publish articles. • Establish web sites. • Offer workshops. • Inform patrons.
Publish Articles • Local newspapers. • Campus newspapers. • Newsletters. • Internal publications, print and web.
Establish Web Sites • Describe what plagiarism is. • Document institution’s response. • Link to other sites. • Provide guidance for teachers, parents, students, etc.
Offer Workshops • Open forums for peers. • Documentation for students/parents. • Plagiarism detection/prevention for teachers/faculty.
Inform Patrons • One on one. • Posters. • Brochures, handouts, flyers. • Public Service Announcements.
We Can Also: • Assist in locating suspect papers and report findings. • Assist patrons to locate and document appropriate information. • Create partnerships with other libraries. • Educate teachers/faculty.
