Climate in Anglo America A presentation from Linda Vogelbacher 2Mc geography rm FS 2006
Climate in general • Anglo America = Canada & USA • 30° - 70° in the northern hemisphere • All various climate terms found • High variation in temperature • High climate extremes, especially in Canada • 5 main climate regions • Large influences
Influences to the Climate • Continental polar air & humid tropical air masses crush • Rocky Mountains & Appalachen • Oceans (Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic)
Continental Climateshumid & moderate • North east: Rainy Climate cold winter, short springtime, warm summer, balmy (mild) autumn • South east: Rainy Climate humid winter & summer, gentle springtime & autumn • South west: Arid Climate warm & dry summer, hotness, partly desert climate • Middle west & Texas: Semiarid Climate to the west more dryer, warm summer, cold winter
Mountain Climate • Rocky Mountains: snowy winters, east side of the mountain dry Oceanic Climate • Coastal regions in northern west: much rain in summer & winter, gentle winter
Tropical Climate • Florida, Hawaii: whole year warm, summer humid & dry Arctic & Subarctic Climate • Alaska, North Canada icy winter southern part: warm summer northern part: coolish summer
Dangers of the Climate • Droughts middle west, 3 hard periods: 1930, 1970, 1980 • Floods • Hurricanes / Tornados → increasing with global warming / climate change
Central questions • Compare the climate charts of Bern, Washington D.C. and Ottawa. Are there any parallels? • How much do the Americans take care of their climate?
Short Teamworking 1.Discuss in small groups of 3 or 4 people the advantages and the disadvantages of the various climate types in Anglo America. Include the dangers of the climate! 2.Collation of the answers on the blackboard.
End of the Presentation Thank you for paying attention and collaboration.
