  4. Moses Austin • Goal –settle families in TX - make money and pay off his debts • Obtained approval to start an Anglo-American colony in TX

  5. Mexican Officials • Moses Austin traveled to San Antonio de Bexar seeking permission to carry out his plans • Denied grants due to past filibusters • Austin dies of pneumonia

  6. Stephen F. Austin • Took up Dad’s plan • The “Old 300” = the first 300 families • 177 acres if they were farmers and 4,428 acres if they were ranchers • Colony plagued by drought and attacks from Karankawas • Some returned to the U.S. • Colony - prospered over time until TX Revolution

  7. Colonization Law of 1825 • No taxes • Homestead rights – land or tools couldn’t be taken away to pay debts • Capital on west bank of Brazos river – called San Felipe de Austin • Austin = Father of Texas

  8. Green DeWitt • Goal – to bring settlers to Texas • Founded a colony southwest of San Felipe de Austin

  9. Martin de Leon • Goal – bring settlers to Texas from Mexico • Settled 200 families • Founded Victoria in 1824

  10. 1830 Texas • Anglo Texas population was about 20,000
