US vs. JAPAN • 1939 Japan expanded to grab European resources & possessions in Southeast Asia • US banned sale of war materials to Japan – stop Japanese aggression • Japan saw this as an attempt to interfere in their sphere of influence • Talks between US & Japan about growing tensions • General TojoHideki • extreme militarist with goals to expand empire
Pearl Harbor • General Tojo ordered a surprise attack • December 7, 1941 • Japanese airplanes bombed the American fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii • About 2,400 lives were lost • “a date which will live in infamy” • FDR asked congress to declare war on Japan • December 8, 1941 • December 11, 1941 Germany and Italy declared war on USA as Japan’s allies
