The book that is most memorable from my childhood is Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss. The theme of this story is to always think of others and never let pride stand in the way of compassion. I think this book stands out in my memory for many reasons. First of all, I love turtles, and I love the rhyming title of this book. Secondly, because I am a middle child, I think it has always been important to me to make sure everyone is treated fairly. As a young child, I always thought my older and younger sisters received special privileges. This book was a reminder that everyone should be viewed as important. Today, I can connect with this story because as a middle school teacher I strive to make sure that all of my students feel valued. One of the personality traits that bothers me the most is when people are arrogant and don’t treat all people with dignity and respect. It’s amazing how this funny, cute story contains such deep messages about tolerance, kindness, and compassion.
