What is reading? Prior Knowledge • What do we already know about this subject/type of book/author/film-maker? • What words might we expect? • What experiences have we had like this? Socio-Cultural Knowledge • What cultural and social practices surround this type of text? Syntactic Knowledge • Does it sound right? Comprehension • Is that correct English grammar? • Does that make sense? • Does that fit what you know? • Does that match the picture? Graphophonic Knowledge • Comprehension • Sound symbol relationships • What sounds do these chunks make?
Reading and the 21st Century Reading is more than understanding print matter. It involves making meaning from a variety of texts including: • Television • Packaging • Video Games • Road Signs • Movies • Radio Programs • Mobile Phones

What can I do to help? Strong oral language is the foundation of successful reading. Talk is central to all aspects of literacy development. • Modelreading to your child. It is important for your child to see you • reading for real purposes and enjoyment. • Continue to read to your children even when they can read independently. • Make a time in your daily routine when you and your child are relaxed, to read • together. This reading time (10 – 15 minutes each day) should not be stressful, • rushed or tested. • Support your child’s reading choices. Find ways to read texts that they want to • read. This may include comic books, computer programs, graphic novels or • magazines. Remember, easier texts help children to automatize reading • strategies and skills, allowing for deeper comprehension and understanding to occur. • Promote reading. Use books, audio books and electronic books as rewards, • gifts and incentives.
