ELC – STEM SessionPractitioners 30thJanuary 2018 (9-10.30am)
Plan for the Session • Ideas to engage everyone in STEM from ELC involved in the National STEM Project • Hands on Science and STEM Activities to develop Science Skills • A look at the Early Years Science Outcomes – sharing good practice discussion
STEM Ideas from National STEM project nurseries • STEM – all staff trained in STEM basics to build confidence • Embedded in practice – not one-off activities, more about the skills development • Parental Engagement with STEM
STEM Ideas from National STEM project nurseries Activities to develop skills of scientific enquiry: • Observing over Time • Identifying and Classifying • Pattern Seeking • Research • Fair Testing
Activity 1 - Quickdraw In pairs – • Choose one person to be the drawer/questioner • The other person takes one picture card and has to describe what they see (but not name it) You have TWO minutes starting… What skills does this task develop?
Activity 2 – Bubble Bubble • This activity allows children to observe an air bubble travelling through different liquids. They see how this varies, depending on how thick (viscous) the liquid is. • They are encouraged to explain their observations…
Activity 3 – Make me a duck Simple instructions – Odd numbers = PULL, Even Numbers = PUSH More complex instructions – 1 = PUSH, 2 = PULL, 3 = TWIST, 4 = BEND, 5 = SQUEEZE, 6 = You choose which force to use! What skills does this task develop?
STEM Activities • Examples… • Sharing good practice… • Where to find resources/ideas • STEM Ambassadors http://aberdeensciencecentre.org/stem-ambassadors/
Parental Engagement with STEM • Why? Building STEM capital within families • How? Parent/Child Activities for in nursery; STEM bags
Early Years Science Outcomes • Have a look at the hand out produced by your colleagues in a CPD session in September. • Is there anything you could add?
