  3. STEM – Day Two Outcomes for STEM Participants Participants will: • develop an understanding of key attributes for an effective STEM learning environment. • analyze STEM-centric unit and lesson components. • Examine STEM resources on the curriculum management system.

Key Activity 2 STEM eea 2012 Discussion Question: Focusing on the STEM Learning Environment, what are key classroom attributes that are essential to developing an effective STEM Learning Environment. • Add items to your Chart. • Organize your list of attributes into an affinity diagram (Teacher’s Role, Student’s Role). There may be overlap.

Implementation Strategies • Content Based Infusion • Teachers provide learning experiences for students that allow for demonstration of the STEM Standards of Practice within a particular content. • Projects that Span Multiple Contents • A more effective method of STEM instruction where teachers collaborate across contents to provide learning experiences for students that allow for use of the STEM Standards of Practice in a holistic manner through projects.

  30. Essential STEM Unit Components • Enduring Understandings. These go beyond discrete facts or skills to focus on larger concepts, principles, or processes. They are transferable—applicable to new situations within or beyond the subject. (McTighe & Wiggins, 1999)

  31. Essential STEM Unit Components • Essential Questions. Essential questions are provocative questions designed to engage student interest and guide inquiry into the important ideas in a field of study. Rather than yielding pat answers, essential questions are intended to stimulate discussion and rethinking over time. (McTighe & Wiggins, 1999)

This section will list Maryland State Curriculum content standards from multiple disciplines that are addressed in the unit. • STEM Standards of Practice. This section identifies the essential skills and knowledge from the STEM Standards of Practice that will be addressed in the unit. • Connection to STEM Careers. This section describes careers in the STEM fields that correlate with content covered in the unit.

Day 2, PM: Offsite Project Instructions • Choose one of the following… • Use the STEM 5E Lesson Plan Template to create a STEM centric lesson to add to one of the unit seeds presented. • Use the STEM U.S.T.E.M model to begin the process of developing a STEM unit outline based in your content area. • Use the e-portfolio instructions and exemplar presented to create an e-portfolio for your students to reflect on their STEM experiences in middle school.
