Technology Integration through 21st Century Skills THEO/SOC 565 Professional Development Project Jessica Foland
Focus • To motivate teachers to be actively engaged in teaching and learning, open to new ideas and approaches, and committed to students who change over the lifetime of their teaching careers.
“Technology will not have a significant impact on student learning until teachers change the way they teach.” Larry Cuban, 1986
Integration is… about reflecting on our current practices.about finding solutions to our problems.about meeting the needs of our students.
21st Century Skill Outcomes With our integration of technology through 21st century skills our schools should… • Have 24/7 access to tools and resources • Culture creativity and innovation • Create social and emotional connections
Fostering Technology Integration • Universal student access • Reliable networks • Multiple opportunities for training and support • Environment which values experimentation
Technology We Have vs. Technology We Want Technology We Have Technology We Want • Promethean boards • Bright links • Laptop cart • Computer lab • Classroom computers • Classroom iPod • Elmos • Clicker voters • Classroom tablets • Updated computer lab & laptop cart
Benefits to Technology Integration • Better student engagement and motivation • Keeps students focused longer • Better instructional materials • Enables students to learn at their own pace
Benefits to Technology Integration • Better communication and interaction • Increased family involvement • Application of real world skills • Prepares students for the future
Integration Ideas for Smartboards • Try interactive websites such as BrainPOP and BrainPOPjr. • You can incorporate Scholastic’s Interactive Whiteboard Activities and Scholastic’s Weekly Reader Online Component • Use the video conferencing tool Skype connect with other classrooms in your area or around the world!
Easy Integration Ideas • Access an online weather forecast such as UM Weather, The Weather Channel, or USA Today Weather. You can then do a compare and contrast activity with a different city each day. • Make science a daily event by viewing NASAs Astronomy Picture of the Day or Goddard Space Centers Earth Science Picture of the Day.
Easy Integration Ideas • Include URLs in your monthly calendar. Education World provides printable and editable coloring calendars for students. • Challenge your students with a Math Problem of the Week to get in a quick spiral review. • Introduce a word of the day to extend student vocabulary at morning meeting.
Easy Integration Ideas • Have students send papers via e-mail for teacher audio comments. • Use Microsoft Word to capture classroom discussions for posting and review. • Use electronic smart boards or bright links.
Easy Integration Ideas • Virtual field trips to the Smithsonian Museum, UPM Forest Life, or the Moon! • You can also view AR Sights to travel to the pyramids or the Eiffel Tower!
Final Thought… While information does not equal knowledge and technology is not a “cure-all”, thoughtful, meaningful, and authentic integration of technology and information resources can enhance learning and lead to development of knowledge.
