How Much Can We Still Save ? • Design housing as below : • Improve air-tightness of buildings to prevent hot air from entering the building. • Improving glazing frames to reduce thermal bridges. • Manage heat exchange between outgoing colder air and incoming hot air with mechanical ventilation system. • KSA climate limits the use of • Night ventilation factors • Therefore, KSA houses will always have a small cooling load to be managed but we can still approach the passive house standard
Buildings Under Construction In GCC • It appear that new houses under construction in GCC are not properly insulated. We are seeing this situation in Kuwait where R is 10 for the walls and R is 13 for the roof according to the Kuwait Building Code of Practice. • In fact ,we calculated the R value for the walls and find out that it was only 7.2 due to conduction through concrete beams (55% white blocks, 25% concrete beams and 20% windows / door). • There is a clear need for more insulation, and therefore for stringent Building Code of Practice.

Kuwait Ministry of Electricity and Water and GE Energy yesterday announced the signing of aturnkey contract thatwill help address the growing demand for power in the State of Kuwait. Kuwait: Monday, September 14 - 2009 As per the $2.65bn contract, GE and Hyundai Heavy Industries will develop a new, 2,000-megawatt (MW) power plant in Sabiya.The Government of Kuwait-owned plant will add much needed power to the grid, allowing Kuwait to boost electricity production to helpmeet growing demand. When completed, the plant will raise Kuwait's power capacity from current levels of around 11,000 megawatts.Kuwait's robust business and residential growth has strained the country's power generation capability, resulting in power outagesduring the hot summer months. "This will be the largest combined cycle power plant in Kuwait and it is an important step in our plans to boost powercapacity to meet continuing demand, which is projected to grow at about 8% a year,“said His Excellency Dr. Bader Shabeeb Al Shriaan, Kuwait's Minister of Electricity and Water. "A reliable supply of electricity is critical to avoid future power shortages and to support the continued economic and social developmentof Kuwait. GE's technological capability and strong local service support will help meet the need for responsible, efficient energy inKuwait," he added. …. GE will begin shipping equipment by the middle of 2010. The Sabiya power plant is scheduled to come on line in two phases. The firstphase will add 1,300 MW of capacity to the Kuwait electricity grid in 2011, with the second phase adding the remaining 700 MW in2012. Primary fuel will be natural gas, with distillate as a backup.The gas and steam turbines will be manufactured at GE facilities in the USA.
