THE INSTITUTE OF HIGHER EDUCATION OVID OF SULMONA THE LICEO GINNASIO OVID
500 STUDENTS AND 40 TEACHERS TO BUILD OUR FUTURE! The Ovid lyceum bases its training on the sound ethical and aesthetic principles of the classical-humanist civilization, together with scientific and mathematical disciplines. The school is at the service of a vast area that encompasses the center of Abruzzo, from the High Sangro to the Val Pescara. The area is rich in history and art as well as natural beauty and is characterized by the presence of important cultural institutions and initiatives. The school, strives to enhance the value of its cultural and environmental heritage in order to strengthen its local national-identity so it is open to exchanges and comparison with other cultures. This perispective leads to a fruitful cooperation with institutions and organizations ( universities, the “Giostra Cavalleresca”, Sulmonacinema ).
The Ovid Lyceum, interpreting the people of Peligna’s expectations, initiated the “Certamen Ovidianum Sulmonense” during the 1997/1998 school year. It was a competition for the translation and interpretation of a passage from Ovid. The contest was open to students from national and European classical lyceums. The initiative aims to revitalize the knowledge of the latin poet of Sulmona, “tenerorum lusor amorum”, whose work has been a constant point of reference throughout the ages, for a number of artistic schools of thought and in much of Europe.
HISTORY The Ovid lyceum was officially established in the 1935/1936 school year, but the building was home to the Jesuit boarding school since 1686, of which Leopoldo Dorrucci was rector. During its secular educational activity, teachers have emerged and students have been trained to a assume a relevant intellectual, executive and scientific role on a national level. Among these are the philosopher Giuseppe Capograssi, who is a member of the Constitutional Court; prof. Bruno Gentili, Greek scholar, who is a member of the Accademia Dei Lincei; prof. Francesco Sabatini, linguist, president of the Accademia Della Crusca; Dr. Filippo Giorgi, scientist, Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. The high school is committed to safeguarding the classical studies, which promotes a critical approach towards complex contemporary reality and allows an easier access to navigate amongst the plurality of languages. Therefore the high school is anchored on a curriculum consolidated over time.
However it has responded to the evolving needs of the students and the transformation of society by adding a five year English language program and prioritizing the study of math by adding an hour into its first year curriculum, reorganizing of the educational courses of Latin and Greek, the use of the natural method for the teaching of classical languages and by adding a variety of curricular and extra-curricular activities. At the end of a student’s studies he or she can decide freely to further her education or enter into the work world.

CERTAMEN OVIDIANUM SULMONENSE The introduction of “Certamen” is part of the formative aims that classical studies have: an in-depth understanding of the past and of its values to gain a better knowledge of the present.
A historical, artistic and cultural understanding beginning in one’s own territory, is the starting point to achieve that purpose. The study of Sulmona’s poet, “tenerorum lusor amorum”, is indispensable as is promoting the knowledge of his personality, his works and the age he lived in. Ovid’s vast interests his refined sensivity, the complexity of his emotional world, the heroes, the pathos, the epos, the plurality of generes, the still unresolved “problem”, the “relegatio” and his relationship with the Augustan regime, the musicality and the ease of his verse, all can give rise to a wide range of didactic activities involving five classes. Certamen seeks to extend the study of this poet from Sulmona to other high schools throughout the country as well as Europe and to provide an opportunity for young Italian and European students who share a passion for the Latin Letters to meet.
The winner of the first prize of 2011 edition. During Certamen students have put on the following plays based on the original texts of Ovid: -A strange journey (from “Sorrows”) -Love Stories (from “Trasformations”) -Just let yourself be loved (from “the Heroines”)
