What happens at CoP? • Opportunity for students to review their preference list with informed choice • Realistic review of both their study and training options • Decisions can be made to be more reflective of interest, talents and learning style • 7 and half days for final input into VTAC system VCE students- IB students until 8 Jan • VTAC Guide full details

Results • Students receive VCE study scores and ENTER ranking • Scores have been adjusted once by VCAA and once VTAC • All bonuses built into final ENTER result • Evident ENTER problems; missing results, – direct students to VTAC 1300 number ONLY • If VTAC Information correct on system – ENTER result correct

  5. SELF MANAGEMENT • Decide on your plan of action for the week • Resist the pressure and temptation to make decisions for students and parents • Staying sane - treat yourself during and at the end of each day

  6. Be prepared • Interviews should be arranged according to need • Tag students that may be extra counselling • Admin support that this time very useful – critical • Prepare easy access to Hotline numbers; support agencies;

  7. VTAC - Results • VCE results for students Monday 14 December • VCE Results available for counselling only purposes from VTAC – Sunday evening • Via Course Link • Your principal will receive a letter re this with very clear instructions on how the information can be used

  8. VTAC Course Link Access via ‘schools liaison’ tab Have to be registered to be able to use this Using Course Search – select criteria to identify courses of interest. From the list click on last of the course of interest - find out how many places were offered and what the range of ENTERs were for that course. Good for using with ‘RC’ courses & TAFE

  9. This will take you into the next screen with details of number of offers, from there you can go to data graphs

Irregular Offer Students have the opportunity to apply for an irregular offer only after Round 1 offers are released (courses lower or not included) Must be eligible for the course Must contact the selection officer to see if any places are available – may not know until end of Round 1 enrolment period Print off the IO form from MyInfo portal Form has to go to selection officer NOT VTAC

Messages to parents and students at this time Ascertain which of the many options are preferable, and get them to prioritise Allow time, particularly in the early part of the week for disappointment, celebration, commiseration etc. Leave the decision-making for a couple of days Let them take responsibility and do the running around and follow-up NOT YOU

Use the resources available at the different organisations Be open-minded – taking a detour in a direction not expected may push them out of their comfort zone but it can provide a way to get them back on track Mid-year entry another option Single subject enrolment whilst working part or even full-time – e.g.UM

  14. Pathways are important… • Provide a range of options that students may not have considered previously • Enable students to commence study in their area of interest • Assist students who may not have the prerequisites or ENTER required for a particular course • Increase opportunities for students to gain a tertiary place

Pathways can be… • Year 13 courses • Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree courses • Foundation year courses offered by some universities • Degree courses in a relevant study area • Refer to tertiary institution websites for details of pathways and articulation arrangements

Pathways… examples Education and Nursing • TAFE Liberal Arts, Sport and Children’s Services courses provide pathways to secondary and primary teaching • TAFE Certificate 1V Nursing can provide a pathway to the Bachelor of Nursing • General degree courses in arts, science, engineering and business provide pathways to teaching, nursing and a range of other options

Pathways… examples Engineering and Science • TAFE offers a range of Engineering courses • Certificate and Diploma courses include electronics, computer systems, aerospace, mechatronics, mechanical /manufacturing and civil engineering • Victoria University – Foundation Studies in Health, Engineering and Science

  18. COP Scenarios • Student with a lower ENTER than expected and now reviewing preferences • All listed preferences between 5 and 10 ranks higher

  19. Scenarios- continued • Student with a higher ENTER than expected and now reviewing their ENTER (looking for more ‘value’ from their ENTER or/ not want to waste points)

  22. Scenarios… checklist • Consider the full range of pathways • Year 13 programs • TAFE bridging courses • TAFE to Higher Education pathways • Higher Education – foundation programs • General degrees in arts, sciences, health, business, building, etc.

Scenarios…other options • A year of employment - provides thinking time, industry/work experience, maturity • Gap Year – provides a varied and exciting range of choices for travel, work and life experience • A combination - paid or voluntary work and some part time study to acquire valuable work and life skills • Alternative pathway to final career goal e.g. education traineeship into teaching

CoP Services • All universities and TAFE institutes offer services during Change of Preference • These include hotlines, email and web based information, advisory services, information sessions, mini expos and campus tours • Encourage students and their parents to visit TAFE institutes and university campuses • Some Group Training Companies can help may have vacancies.

  25. Challenges and Issues • Dealing with unrealistic expectations • Dealing with upset and angry students and parents • Dealing with conflict between students and their parents • Dealing with negative perceptions of TAFE (still an issue?)

  26. Strategies - summary • Encourage a team approach at school • Staff to assist could include MIPS, VCE Coordinator, Year 12 Coordinator and other staff • Keep in touch with your career networks • Utilise services and assistance provided by tertiary institutions during COP
