  1. AddOfficeHere. CSCY Postgraduate Student Seminar DayReflections on Researching with Children across Majority and Minority World ContextsProfessor Samantha Punch School of Applied Social Science, University of Stirling, Scotland. Email: s.v.punch@stir.ac.uk Abstract This paper reflects on some methodological, conceptual and practical issues involved in carrying out research with children across a variety of settings including families, schools, residential care and rural communities. It draws on ethnographic and interview-based studies including siblings and birth order, food practices in residential children’s homes in Scotland, patterns of intergenerational change in Asia, rural childhoods in Bolivia and a follow-up study ten years on exploring youth transitions and migration. In particular, the paper considers the hidden struggles of fieldwork, emotions and the role and use of field diaries. It argues that guilt, apprehension, fears and worries are legitimate, common and even useful experiences of being in the field. It explores how we might use field diaries more explicitly to examine the ways our personal challenges and emotions impact on the process of doing research with children. Date and Venue: Thursday 1st May 10.00 – 5.00pm, ICOSS This free event is specifically for post-graduate students researching any aspect of childhood, children, young people and babies.. The day starts with the key note speaker followed by postgraduate students presenting short papers. Postgraduate students are warmly encouraged to submit a short abstract (150 words) relating to the theme to d.j.lessels@sheffield.ac.uk by 28th February 2014.
