MEMORY ITEM FIRE ENGINE FIRE ON THE GROUND ENGINE STARTS • Throttle – 1700 RPM for a few minutes • Fuel Selector – off • When Engine Quits • Shutdown and inspect for damage
MEMORY ITEM FIRE ENGINE FIRE ON THE GROUND ENGINE FAILS TO START • Throttle – full • Mixture – idle cut-off • Fuel – off • Continue cranking for 10 seconds • If ENGINE STARTS: • Mixture rich • Throttle 1700 RPM • Confirm Fuel Selector – off • When Engine Quits • Shutdown and inspect for damage
MEMORY ITEM FIRE ENGINE FIRE IN THE AIR • Mixture – idle cut-off • Fuel – off • Master – off • Cabin heat and air – off • Airspeed – 100 KTS or higher • Ventilate Cabin • Forced Landing
MEMORY ITEM FIRE ELECTRICAL FIRE • Master – off • APS – off • All Other Switches – off • Cabin heat and air vents – off • Fire Extinguisher – activate • Ventilate Cabin Refer to Checklist 7. Radios – off • Check circuit breakers – DO NOT RESET
MEMORY ITEM FIRE ELECTRICAL FIRE If fire appears out and electrical power is necessary for flight: • Master – on • Avionics power – on • Necessary electrics – on (in priority order, one at a time) • Continue or divert as necessary • Inspect for damage after landing
MEMORY ITEM FIRE ELECTRICAL FIRE If fire re-occurs or electrical power is NOT necessary: • Master – off • Continue or divert as necessary • Inspect for damage after landing
MEMORY ITEM FIRE CABIN FIRE • Master – off • Cabin heat/air/vents – off • Fire extinguisher – activate • Ventilate cabin • Land as soon as possible • Inspect for damage
ENGINEFAILURES MEMORY ITEM TAKE-OFF RUN 1. Control the Aircraft 2. Throttle – idle 3. Brakes – apply • Flaps – retract • Mixture – idle cut-off • Mags – off • Master – off
ENGINEFAILURES MEMORY ITEM AFTER TAKE-OFF 1. Control the Aircraft – 65 KTS (60 KTS with flaps) 2. Throttle – idle 3. Continue straight ahead using shallow turns to avoid obstructions 4. If time permits • Mixture – idle cut-off • Fuel – off • Mags – off • Flaps – as required • Master – off
ENGINEFAILURES MEMORY ITEM AT ALTITUDE 1. Control the Aircraft – 65 KTS • HOT / RICH / BOTH
MEMORY ITEM BALKEDLANDING • Throttle – Full • Carb Heat – Cold • Flaps – 20o immediately • 55 KTS • Sinking rate stops! Then … • Flaps – 10o (until obstacles are cleared) • 60 KTS Then … • Flaps – Retracted (@ safe altitude, 200’ AGL) • Vy – 73 KTS
FORCED APPROACH MEMORY ITEM 10. Passenger Briefing • Identify the situation • Location of ELT, Survival Gear, Fire Extinguisher, First Aid Kit • Seats – back and upright • Harnesses – secure • Glasses/sunglasses – off • Loose objects – secure • Pens or pencils – out of pockets • Don’t touch the controls • Exit the aircraft once on the ground 11. Shut Down • Fuel selector – off • Mixture – idle cut-off • Mags – off • Master – off (when flaps fully extended) • Doors – unlatched prior to touchdown • Control the Aircraft – 65 KTS • HOT/RICH/BOTH • Field Selection / Plan Approach • Cause Check • Fuel • Oil Temp. and Pressure • Primer – locked • Mags – cycle • Carb heat – HOT • Throttle – vary • Mixture – rich and cycle • Fuel selector - reselect • Attempt a Restart – mixture, master, primer, starter • Mayday call – on current frequency or 121.5 if no answer • Transponder – set to 7700 • ELT remote – on
ROUGH ENGINE OR LOSS OF POWER MEMORY ITEM ROUGH ENGINE • HOT / RICH / BOTH • Fuel gauges – check • Engine Instruments – oil temp. & pressure • Primer – locked • Mags – cycle • Vary mixture settings – rich – lean – rich • Fuel Selector – reselect
ROUGH ENGINE OR LOSS OF POWER MEMORY ITEM LOW OIL PRESSURE • Cross check oil temp. gauge High Oil Temperature • Be prepared for sudden engine failure • Throttle – reduce where practicable • Use minimum power • Pre-Cautionary Landing / Forced Landing Normal Oil Temperature Refer To Checklist • Oil pressure gauge or relief valve malfunctioning • Proceed to nearest airport
ROUGH ENGINE OR LOSS OF POWER MEMORY ITEM HIGH OIL TEMPERATURE • Cross check oil pressure gauge Low Oil Pressure • Be prepared for sudden engine failure • Throttle – reduce where practicable • Use minimum power • Pre-Cautionary Landing / Forced Landing Normal Oil Pressure Refer To Checklist • Throttle - reduce • Lower nose (better cooling)
ROUGH ENGINE OR LOSS OF POWER CARBURETORICING Symptoms are gradual loss of RPM and/or eventual engine roughness leading to failure. • Carb Heat – HOT • Throttle - FULL Engine runs smoothly: • Carb Heat – COLD • Throttle – readjust If conditions require the continued use of Carburetor Heat: • Use the minimum amount of Carburetor Heat to prevent ice from forming • Mixture – lean for smoothest engine operation
ROUGH ENGINE OR LOSS OF POWER SPARK PLUG FOULING • Verify Mags – cycle – back to both • Mixture – lean to recommended lean setting for cruise If problem does not clear up in several minutes: • Determine if a richer mixture will produce smoother operation If the engine still runs rough: • Proceed to the nearest airport for repairs using the BOTH position of the ignition switch unless extreme roughness dictates the use of a single (LEFT/RIGHT) ignition position.
ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTIONS AMMETER SHOWS – DISCHARGE OR VOLTAGE LIGHT ACTIVATES • Avionics power – off • Master – off • Check Circuit Breakers – alternator field and alternator • Push to reset • All electrics – off • Master – on • Check low voltage light/ammeter indication and activate electrics to determine if alternator is working If ammeter shows discharge: • Non essential electrical equipment – off (conserve the battery) • Master – alternator side – off • Land as soon as practical
ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTIONS AMMETER SHOWS – EXCESSIVE RATE OF CHARGE • Avionics power – off • Master – off • Master – on • Check ammeter If ammeter is less than two needle widths: • Avionics power – on If ammeter shows excessive rate of charge: • Master – alternator side – off • Non essential electrical equipment – off (conserve the battery) • Land as soon as practical
OTHER EMERGENCY PROCEDURES STATIC BLOCKAGE • Alternate static source – pull on • Windows / vents / heater – closed • Refer to P.O.H. for airspeed adjustments
OTHER EMERGENCY PROCEDURES MEMORY ITEM SPIN • Throttle – idle • Ailerons – neutral • Apply and hold full rudder in opposite direction of rotation • Hold control inputs until rotation stops • Neutralize rudder • Ease out of dive
OTHER EMERGENCY PROCEDURES MEMORY ITEM SPIRAL DIVE • Throttle – idle • Level the wings – using ailerons and rudder • Ease out of dive
OTHER EMERGENCY PROCEDURES DOOR OPEN IN FLIGHT • Control the Aircraft • Attempt to Close the Door – if practical Follow Instructions Below • Reduce airspeed – 75 KTS • Open window and vents • Momentarily shove the door outward • Forcefully close the door • Lock the door If unable to close the door or if door closure is not desired 1. Hold 10 KTS extra on approach
