HOLIDAYS. Target group: FBC Students BY Gale Johnson & Lisanne Roberson. GOAL. Students will be able to talk about their own holidays and read about favorite holiday destinations. Students will familiarize themselves with appropriate travel words.

HOLIDAYS Target group: FBC Students BY Gale Johnson & Lisanne Roberson
GOAL • Students will be able to talk about their own holidays and read about favorite holiday destinations. • Students will familiarize themselves with appropriate travel words. • Students will also be able to design and book their own vacation.
Time • Approximately 7 hours
Hour 1Warm up: Where in the world? • Open class discussion. Talk about previous holidays. Who has travelled? Where did you go? Where would you like to go? Have you ever been on a plane… (Have students get into pairs and discuss the questions then share with class)
Vocabulary • Go over travel vocabulary • Vocabulary exercise handout (pair work)
Hour 2 Present the Project • Explain the project to the students. “Imagine you are going on a vacation down South”. Each student will plan and present a trip! Criteria: • 1 week vacation (7days) • Down South (Caribbean) • Double occupancy • Unlimited budget
Selecting a destination • Allow your students the pleasure of discovery. • Choices can be made from the internet or by brochures. • Also consider using the travel section from The Gazette.
Hours 3 & 4Start Project • Teacher provides criteria checklist. (Students must make sure that their destination has all the elements. If not they must select another destination.) • All destinations must be approved by the teacher, no two students can have the same hotel. • When approved student can then proceed to simulate the booking of their vacation.
TIP • Teacher could assign destinations to guarantee a variety. You do not want everyone going to Cayo Coco!!!!!
Booking • Booking can be done on-line using www.expedia.ca or travel brochures.
Criteria • Destination • Hotel: name,address etc.. • Departure date and time • Return date and time • Airport + code (YUL,FLL…) • Airline • Flight number • Duration of flight • Stopover??? • Arrival time • Transportation to hotel • Star rating • Beachfront • Feel free to add or subtract any information
Hour 5Question Workshop • Teacher shows question words and basic structure and helps the class assemble a list of 20 possible questions that could be asked the presenter. • Example: How much does your trip cost?
Hour 6 & 7Presentation: • Destination details. • What’s included? • Pictures (can print from Expedia) • What activities you will do • Total price • Class should ask questions for clarification and more information.
Tip • Require each student to ask 2 questions per presentation.
Conclusion • Project learning is fun but can be unpredictable. Flexibility is a must. • Let enthusiasm guide you and your students.
