Procedures • Created survey using surveymonkey.com • Music Therapist working with children with autism • Chose participants from AMTA Sourcebook randomly • Looked under Therapist who work with autism • counted down the list by 4’s and chose that person • Sent emails to 85 people meeting criteria • Approximately 30% of people emailed answered survey
Instrument: Survey Questions: • How long have you been working with children with autism? • What methods do you use with children with autism? • Rate the effectiveness of each method used • How often do you work with each of the following Domains: Communication, Academic, Behavior and Motor? • What other work settings do you work in?
Music Therapy Methods with children with Autism • Song writing • Re-Creative • Improvisation • Song listening • Other • Includes instrument playing, social skills, relaxation, calming, singing, movement
Results: Effectiveness of Methods • On a scale of low-high Song writing had an average response of 3.11 • On a scale of low-high Re-creative had an average response of 3.00 • On a scale of low-high Improvisation had an average response of 3.59 • On a scale of low-high Song Listening had an average response of 2.31
Domains • An average response of 4.96 participants work on communication with clients. • An average response of 4.09 participants work on Academic skills with clients • An average response of 4.48 participants work on Behavior skills with clients • An average response of 4.09 participants work on Motor skills with clients
Discussion • The method that respondents perceived as most effective was improvisation” • Communication was the most common domain area participants said the worked on in Music Therapy
