  13. Big Buddha The majestic figure if Big Buddha is seated on the hillside of Po Lin Monastery. The eyes, lips, incline of the head and even the right hand raised to deliver a blessing to all. It is 26.4 metres high, weighted 220 tones and it took 10 years to complete. It is the heightest bronze buddha in the world. Finally, it was opened in 1993 for tourists to visit. There is an information centre under the Big Buddha, but you have to buy a ticket before going in. Big Buddha is an attraction in which the National Geographic Traveller commend tourists to go. You can also place in your hands a bamboo cylinder containing a mass of fortune sticks, and by shaking it carefully, one numbered stick will finally fall to the ground. Match it with the relevant printed Fortune Paper and learn what the Fates have in store for you. This is a very tradtional fortune-telling method of the Chinese.

Stilt House • Tai O is a popular tourist spot in Lantau Island, as it has its unique culture and natural environment, a lot of tourists would like to go and visit there. • Tai O is famous for its fishing village scenery, such as fishing boats, waterways and stilt houses, theses historical settings have been retained in nowadays. • The fishing village setting, especially the stilt houses is probably the most important feature which makes Tai O attractive to local and international visitors.

  16. MORE THINGS ABOUT THE STILT HOUSES Stilt houses are the special architectures in Tai O, in the past, the majority of population in Tai O worked either in farms or in the sea. For the convenience of work, people began to build some special kind of houses along the riverside, which could be easily pulled down and rebuilt.Most of the stilt houses are now built with wood and tin plates. Stone pillars underneath the ‘pang’ are also replaced by a kind of concrete wood, which can stand strong winds .

  17. THE INTERVIEW OF A FAMILY WHO LIVED IN THE STILT Helen:How much does this stilt house cost? Father:This stilt house may cost nowadays at least seven to eight hundred thousand dollars, this is not very expensive, but we can already keep the tradition culture. As a response to meet the growing family size, flat roofs have replaced rounded roofs to facilitate the construction of the second floor. Helen: Do you enjoy living here?

  18. Mother: Yes, of course we do. Living here makes us to relax, we feel free and comfortable here, we will not be disturbed by the noisy environment , it is so peace and lovely here. Helen: There do not have any parks near by, do you feel bord here? The son: No, of course I don’t. My neighbors and I are good friends, we always play together I don’t feel boring, rather I feel excited, I enjoy living here more than in the city! As city is crowded, I don’t have any friends at all, so I prefer living here.

  19. 5:45-6:30 Visit Tianhou Temple

  20. Tianhou Temple • Tian Hou Temple has a name of ‘Red tripod Tian Hou Temple’ because once upon a time, the people lived here were all fishermen. One day, a fisherman saw a red tripod that flew on the sea, so he picked it up to worship the god. Afterward, the other fishermen saw the red tripod, they admitted that they were the owner of the red tripod so they put it on their ship and went to their boat. Unluckily, on that night, a turbulent wind had come, so the red tripod has lost. But then, the red tripod appears in there again. So the fisherman who found that in the sea before thought that the red tripod appears again because the manifestation of Ms Tin Hau. From that time onward, the fishermen built a Tin Hau Temple to worship Ms Tian Hou. In the Tian Hou Temple, there must have a red tripod put there.

  21. Tian Hou is represent the queen of the heaven and the people believed that Tian Hou is the fishermen’s angle. Before the reclamation, Tian Hou Temple was near the sea, and the fishermen always went here to worship Tian Hou because when they got off their boat, the Tian Hou Temple was there. So it is very convenient. Usually the people who work in the sea will went here to worship Tian Hou. In the temple, there have bamboo cylinder for asking the future. Tianhou Temple

  22. 6:30-7:30 Buy souvenirs ( salted fish, dry shrimp)

  23. Souvenir When refrigerator was not invented, people could not keep the fresh food for too long. In order to keep the food for a longer period, people will preserve the food with different methods, such as dried the food under the sun or preserved it with salt or oil. Dried seafood, shrimp paste and salted fish are the famous souvenir in Tai O.

  24. 7:30-9:30 Eat dinner (seafood)

  25. Dinner Tai O is an old fishing village in Hong Kong, some fisherman is still living there. They usually drive their sampan near the pier and sell their fresh seafood. People can buy the seafood from the fisherman and find a restaurant and cook it for you.
