Lizards • Suborder is Lacertilia or Sauria. • 4,470 different species, only 2 are venomous. • Have visible ears, which are holes in the side of the head.
Heaviest lizard is the Indonesian Komodo Dragon • Longest lizard is the Crocodile Monitor • Smallest lizard is the Jaragua Lizard
Snakes • Suborder is Serpentes • 2,920 different species, either venomous or non-venomous. • Believed to hear very low-pitched sounds • Have a spectacle or clear scale over their eye. • Some snakes have pit organs on their face.
Smallest snakes are in the Blind Snake families. • Largest snakes are Reticulated Pythons and Green Anacondas.
Worm Lizards • Suborder is Amphisbaenia • 156 different species, most are fossorial. • Scales are arranged in rings and separated by grooves. • Sizes can range from 3.1 to 32 inches.
Conservation • The IUCN lists 243 species of Squamata either extinct or at the risk of becoming extinct. • 14 extinct, 70 critically endangered, 159 endangered. • 1 extinct and 4 endangered in the United States.
