  1. Intervention Presentation for Increasing Team Effectiveness Performance Problem Clear Roles & Responsiblities are not clearly defined between two teams resulting in poor communciation and interpersonal conflict.

  2. Behavior Symptoms: Team members avoid communicating with each other due to conflicting expectations. Organizational Symptoms: Sales Quotes are mishandled and/or not treated as potential new business. Deadlines routinely missed.

  3. The “FISHBOWL” Technique” Clusters… Team Integration Process A tool used to generate divergent views. . Group-on-Group Technique

  4. Conditions: under which this Strategy might be effective: • Problem Solving Tool • Tool to generate divergent views • Team Building • As an Agenda setting device. • Evaluation of Training • Improvement of Intergroup Communication & Relations. • Learn Group Behavior • To identify objectives • To resolve conflict • To resolve a training issue

  5. MATERIALS Sentence Handles: written on white pads.

  6. Sentence Handles: • One thing I’m looking forward to about working with the other team is __________ • One thing I’m not looking forward to about working with the other team is_________ • One thing I admire about the other team is • I think that they think we see them as ___

  7. REMINDER • The team will be working together as one team under one leader. • Acknowledge the difficulties & challenges this poses. • The activity will give them the oppotuntiy to express themselves, and plan ways to deal with them as needed.

  8. TIME TWO HOURS (or longer as desired)

  9. Two Groups: Select a random method (e.g. drawing straws) to determine which team sits in the center circle first.

  10. Form 2 circles E E E E E E E E E E E E E

  11. The Inside Circle are asked to express their viewpoint by making statements directed to the specific issues. FLIP the paper over (flip chart) & ask each person to begin and go around the circle completing the statement in 30 seconds. Ask the other team to sit in the outer circle to listen to the other team. The inner circle will scribe the responses directly on the flip chart paper their viewpoint.

  12. Depending on the size group (10 – 15) allow the Inner circle 5 minutes to complete the task. Call time and switch places. Now have the new group on the Inner circle complete the same It’s important to keep strict time limits for this activity. Use a gong or other noise to indicate time is up. Main Menu

  13. Continue switching groups after each member has completed the statement. Present the second handle written on the flip chart and ask the inner circle group to complete it, each person speaking one at a time. If someone is speaking softly remind them that they are in a “fishbowl” and that the outside group must be able to hear them. NOTE: THERE IS NO DISCUSSION OF ANY OF THE STATEMENTS AT THIS POINT.

  14. If someone hesitates, let them pass for 1 round and move on. Particpants who are hesitates will soon learn that they must speak up quickly and will do so when it becomes important to them. If they continue to pass, tell them that it is important to hear from everyone. If someone wants to give more input than time allows, consider lengthening the inner circle time; however the second group must be given the same amount of time.. Main Menu

  15. Facilitator Role During the process, stand at the flip chart & record critical issues, concerns, or problems that are mentioned repeatedly. After 1 hour or when the group energy seems quiet down, stop the process & read off the list of issues. State that these were the issues that were repeated over & over. Main Menu

  16. Divide the large group of two teams into groups of four, with 2 members from each team in each group. Ask each group to review the critical issues & prioritize them from most to least important integrating the teams. (Each team must have equal representation from each team). Main Menu

  17. FINISHED PRIORITIZATION Have each group post their prioritized list on the wall at a good distance from each other. Ask for volunteers who are willing to work on each issue & have the volunteers stand in front of the flip chart page they have selected. (Be sure that each group has equal representation from each team) Main Menu

  18. Finale End the session by asking both teams to make a large circle and have each participant finish the statement: • One thing I appreciated about the session today was ___________________________. .

  19. Thank you for you Attention
