  2. Pre-listening Warm-up Questions • What is distance learning? • Look at the second picture. Where do you think the lady is? • Would you prefer to learn in a traditional classroom or to receive instruction at home on your TV or computer? Why or why not?

  3. Pre-listening Vocabulary and Key Concepts • Read through the sentences and figure out what words would fit in the blanks. Then check your answers by listening to a dictation of the full sentences. • (See the sentences in the textbook on page 110---111 )

  4. Pre-listening Predictions • Using the pictures in your textbook and the vocabulary exercises as a starting point, write 3 questions that you think you can get answers in the lecture. (Answers vary)

  6. Listening A. In the first listening, you get down the main subtopics of the lecture. Listen for the four subtopics. ST1: reasons why distance education is growing so rapidly ST2: how distance education works, that is, what the modes of delivery are ST3: some things people who consider distance education need to be aware of B. In the second listening, write down necessary relevant information. Remember to take notes in the right way.

  7. Post-listening • Answer the following questions. • In what two ways can the instructor and student be separated in distance education? (By time and by distance) • How could students learn shorthand in 1840 without having to attend classes?(by correspondence / by mail) • In what year was the first university correspondence catalog offered in the U.S.? (1892) • According to the U.S. Department of State, what percentage of accredited U.S. colleges and universities with 10,000 or more students offer distance education program? (90%) • What does the term synchronous mean? (at the same time)

  8. Post-listening • What are some of the delivery modes of instruction used in distance education? (audio; video; CD-ROM; Internet; Bulletin boards; e-mail) • Can students tall all the time they want or need to complete distance education courses or programs? (no, there are time limits) • Are the fees for distance education programs generally cheaper than those for traditional on-campus programs? Why? (no, they are about the same) • What are two ways many schools recommend that students get high-speed Internet access? (cable modem, DSL) 10. Do students complete distance education courses and programs at the same rate as traditional courses and programs? (no, the dropout rate is higher for distance education courses and programs)

Oral Activities • Discuss with your classmates on the following questions. • What do you think the advantages and disadvantages or distance education are? • Do you think distance education will ever become as common as traditional education? Why or why not? • How can students in other countries find out about distance education opportunities in such countries as the United States?

  10. Homework • Write a summary about distance education in the U.S. • Log on www.educationusa.state.gov to get more information about distance education. • Read the article The Fun They Had
