Chapter 19 Section 2 continued • 1915- U-boat sunk the Lusitania- British passenger liner • 128 Americans died • Germany- “act of barbarism” • German submarine sunk the Sussex- French steamship • Sussex pledge- German government would warn ships before attacking • 1916- Wilson- “he kept us out of war”

  3. Chapter 19 Section 2 continued • 1917- Germany not following the Sussex pledge • Arthur Zimmerman- Germany’s foreign secretary • Offer to Mexico • Mexico declare war on the US- Mexico would get US land in the southwest • Zimmerman note- Mexico was fighting a civil war

  4. Chapter 19 Section 2 continued • Czar Nicholas II- Russia- last Romanov czar • Autocrat- ruler with unlimited power • Russian Revolution occurs • Germany sinks US ships City of Memphis, Illinois, and Vigilancia • Cabinet votes for war • President signs on April 6, 1917
