  1. Chapter 20

  2. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 20 • The first day of the week is significant to Christians! • Jesus was raised from the dead! • The power & significance of the resurrection of Jesus ought to make us run! • True sheep know the true Shepherd’s voice! • Jesus’ Father & God is likewise our Father & God! • Jesus can turn weeping and fear into gladness and peace! • Believing in Jesus brings life, but it only brings life “in His name” (John 20:31)!

  3. An Overview/Theme of John 20: “Seeing Is Believing!” • Seeing the empty tomb is believing! • Mary Magdalene: Saw the stone taken away from the tomb (John 20:1)! • John: Saw the linen cloths lying inside the tomb, but no body (John 20:5)! • Peter: Saw the linen cloths and the handkerchief from His head folded neatly (20:7)! • RESULT: When John saw, he believed (John 20:8)!

  4. An Overview/Theme of John 20: “Seeing Is Believing!” • Seeing the Lord and the reality of His tomb being empty is believing! • Mary Magdalene: Saw the tomb & two angels sitting where His body was (20:12)! • Mary Magdalene: Saw Jesus standing there but did not know it was Jesus (20:14)! • Mary Magdalene: Saw and heard her Teacher alive again (John 20:15-16)! • RESULT: When Mary Magdalene saw the Lord, she believed & told others (20:18)!

  5. An Overview/Theme of John 20: “Seeing Is Believing!” • Seeing the resurrected Lord and the scars on His body is believing! • Ten apostles (without Thomas): Saw the Lord, His hands & His side (John 20:20)! • Ten apostles (with Thomas): Saw the Lord again in their midst (John 20:26)! • Thomas: Saw the Lord and His hands; touched His hands & His side (John 20:25-27)! • RESULT: When the disciples saw the Lord, they believed & told Thomas (20:25)! • RESULT: When Thomas saw the Lord, he believed & proclaimed His deity (20:27-29)!

  6. An Overview/Theme of John 20: “Seeing Is Believing!” • The apostles were eyewitnesses of the resurrection! • Of His death, John wrote that he was a witness and his “testimony is true” (19:35). • “God raised up, of which we are all witnesses” (Acts 2:32)! • “Presented Himself alive…by many infallible proofs” (Acts 1:3)! • To later emphasize the reality & the certainty of the bodily resurrection, John wrote: • “We have heard…have seen…looked upon…our hands have handled” (1 Jn. 1:1). • They were ear-witnesses, eye-witnesses and hand-witnesses. • There was and is no doubt that Jesus was raised from the dead! • The apostles believed it because they knew it!

  7. An Overview/Theme of John 20: “Seeing Is Believing!” • The reliable testimony of the apostles (as eyewitnesses) gives our faith assurance! • Their testimony is true (John 19:34; 21:24), for it is inspired! • Jesus decreed a blessing on “those who have not seen and yet have believed” (29; cf. Heb. 11:1). • “Many other signs” were done in their presence (20:30). • All of the signs done by Christ were written down: • That readers “may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God” (John 20:31). • “And that believing [they] may have life in His name” (John 20:31). • “Believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Rom. 10:9).

  8. Chapter 21

  9. An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!” • Jesus came to give His disciples the basics for life! • “Children, have you any food?” (John 21:5). • They had nothing (John 21:3, 5), not even the basics. • When the disciples reached shore, they saw fish on the fire and bread (John 21:9). • Jesus said, “Come and eat breakfast” (John 21:12). • Jesus “took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish” (John 21:13). • Just the basics: nothing fancy, nothing unnecessary, but exactly what they needed!

  10. An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!” • Jesus came to give His disciples the opportunity to obey Him! • “Cast the net on the right side of the boat…” (John 21:6). • As experienced fishermen who caught nothing, they could have argued. • The text says, “So they cast…” (John 21:6). • Jesus said to cast…they cast. • Jesus said to cast on the right side…so they cast. • Jesus gave them the opportunity to recognize His authority & to obey. And they did!

  11. An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!” • Jesus came to give His disciples an over-abundance! • 7 disciples in the boat (21:2). How many fish did they need? • When they obeyed the Lord’s command, He could have given them just enough. • Upon their full compliance to His command: • “They were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish” (6). • They “came in the little boat…dragging the net with fish” (John 21:8). • The net was “full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three” (21:11). • “There were so many…” (John 21:11). • The disciples started with nothing (John 21:3) and were given an over-abundance!

  12. An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!” • Jesus came to give His disciple another chance! • Peter proclaimed, “I will lay down my life for Your sake” (13:37). • A few hours later, Peter adamantly denied Jesus 3x (17,25-27). • Jesus went thru a lengthy, painful but necessary restoration. • Jesus proceeded to ask Peter three times, “Do you love Me?” (21:15-17). • Perhaps asking 3 questions was to correspond with the 3 denials. • In the process and succession of these questions: • Peter was grieved at his overconfidence & impetuousness against Jesus. • Peter was brought to a level of commitment he sustained for life. • Jesus secured in Peter a stronger, humbler and more devoted leader. • Jesus gave Peter a second chance, and Peter did not let the Lord down!

  13. An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!” • Jesus came to give His disciple some final instructions! • In the process of restoring Peter, Jesus gave Him three instructions, then two more. • Jesus had work for Peter to do, if he would truly commit himself (but not rashly). • “Feed My lambs” (21:15). The young & immature needed to be taught. • “Tend My sheep” (21:16). Jesus’ followers needed a faithful shepherd. • “Feed My sheep” (21:17). The old & mature needed to be taught, also. • “Follow Me” (21:19) – resume the work that he was called to do • “Follow Me” (21:22) – don’t worry about others, take your responsibility

  14. An Overview/Theme of John 21: “Jesus Came to Give!” • As He did for His disciples in John 21, Jesus came to this world to give each of us: • The basics for life! • The opportunity to obey Him! • An over-abundance! • Another chance! • Final instructions!
