Bob's Vision for a Programme of Research with CIPHER: Topics, Outputs, and Grants Robert S. Laramee Department of Computer Science, Swansea University, Wales, UK,
Topics: Data Visualization Our ability to collect, store, and archive data vastly exceeds our ability derive useful knowledge and insight from it. • This is a ubiquitous problem. • Data visualization is key in gaining an understanding large, complex data sets by exploiting the power of the human visual system. • Data visualization leverages computer graphics in order to provide a visual overview, explore, analyze, and present phenomena which is often difficult to understand. • Visualization, inherently interdiciplinary, is critical to fully harness UK health data for patient and public benefit. • One key ingredient is the use of multiple, linked, coordinated views of data
Topics: Data Visualization Example: visualization of CFD simulation data, collaboration with engineering
Topics: Data Visualization Example: visualization of Shakespeare translations, collaboration with modern languages
Topics: Data Visualization Example: visualization of automotive warranty data, collaboration with industry
Topics: Outputs Opportunities for output and publishing span multiple disciplines: Software: visualization software that provides overviews, exploration, analysis, and presentation capabilities Conferences and journals on: • Data visualization: IEEE Vis, EuroVis, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics • Informatics and health informatics: IEEE Conference on Health Informatics (ICHI), Health Informatics Journal (JHI) • Health and technology: IEEE Healthcare Innovation Conference, Health and Technology Journal • Visual analytics: IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology (IEEE VAST), EuroVA etc. Grants
Topics: Grants Grants exploit the natural synergy resulting from cross-disciplinary work Some candidate funding avenues include: EPSRC, Medical Research Council (MRC), Welsh Assembly Government (WAG), The Royal Society, Horizon 2020 Grants also stem from industry: Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship (KESS), Strategic Insight Programme (SIP), Access to Masters (ATM), Acadamia for Business (A4B), Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), etc. We have written collaborative joint bids with engineering (EPSRC), modern languages (AHRC, EPSRC, BTG), biology (EPSRC, NERC), psychology (BTG), Grid-Tools Ltd (KESS), We Predict Ltd (KESS), Telecom Technologies Ltd. (KESS)
