Regular adjectives • Adjectives are words which describe people, places, and things. • In French, masculine adjectives are used with masculine nouns, and feminine adjectives are used with feminine nouns. • This is called Noun-Adjective Agreement.
Form • In French, regular adjectives follow this pattern:
Form • Ex. Le garçon blond. Les garçons blonds. La fille blonde. Les filles blondes. • If the masculine adjective ends in –e, there is no change in the feminine form. Ex. Il esttimide et elleesttimide. • If the masculine adjective ends in-s, there is not change in the plural form. Ex. Il estfrançais et ilssontfrançais.
Irregular adjectives • Adjectives which do not follow the pattern are called IRREGULAR adjectives. EX. Elle est belle. Il est beau. La filleestmignonne et sportive. Le garçonest mignon et sportif.
Adjective Placement • Most adjectives in French go after the noun: EX, Le professeur intelligent l’étudiante intéressante • However, there is a group of adjectives which go in front of the noun. We will call these adjectives BAGS adjectives. BAGS is a mnemonic device to help you remember the adjectives which precede the noun. B Beauty joli, beau/belle A Age jeune, vieux, nouveau/nouvelle G Goodness bon, Mauvais S Size grand, petit
