  1. Richard Hill 2009 The Marriage of IT Vendor Training with Postgraduate Attributes:An Unholy Union?

  2. Summary • Heritage • Producing professionals ('BPXers')‏ • The curriculum • Our experience • Our findings • Conclusions

  3. Heritage • Member of University Alliance for over a decade • MSc IT&M – the 'hybrid manager' • Expanded delivery last 2 years with NetWeaver • SAP toolset moving towards business user • Less technical • (nearly) no programming • Since 2007/8 Pilot Project with TUM • Strong emphasis on technical proficiency

  4. Producing professionals • Employable students • Professional skills • think critically • know how to manage their learning • practical experience of an industrial platform • EBL approach • think about enquiry, practice enquiry, teach enquiry • using SAP to create and deliver content • owning the learning process

  5. The curriculum Undergraduate Postgraduate Level 5 Level 6 Level 7 Web-based Information Systems Visual Composer and EP Business Process Modelling Visual Composer and EP Enterprise Systems Visual Composer, EP config. Java Web Dynpro ESOA MSc Technical Consulting Smart Applications Java Web Dynpro ESOA • Enterprise modelling • BPM • Process re-engineering and optimisation • Portal prototyping Business Intelligence, Information, Communication & Behaviour KMC and EP + SAP Academy

  6. Our experience • More PBL than EBL • students engaged with solving teething troubles • directly supported teaching & learning approach • Students don't like programming • SAP toolset supports visual approach, Visual Composer • Students get jobs (but this is in decline) • Teaching materials for BPM mostly absent • professional attributes neglected • BPM is a growth area (as is CPD)

  7. Our findings • Students will need to bridge the gap between business users and technical functions • CPD Frameworks exist - http://www.sfia.org.uk/ • Skills Framework for the Information Age • Need for autonomy in learning is becoming more apparent • large influx in non-EU student body • self assessment against framework useful • curriculum of enquiry needs facilitation • We can use training as a vehicle for enquiry • critical reflection upon the curriculum

  8. Conclusions • BPXers have specific, emerging skill-set • Difficult to provide realistic simulation/role-play without: • tools that will be used in industry • recognition that professional skills are paramount • Professional attributes start from Day One • critical thinking is more than asking questions • this may be a fundamentally different way of thinking for you • It's OK to question in a safe environment

  9. Conclusions - 2 • The toolset must be used to explore the professional attributes • Key skills identified as lacking: • writing • oral presentation • reasoning and argumentation • CPD frameworks can help, providing that: • students self-assess • start the process early • staff provide continuous micro-feedback
