How it is Caused • Bone infection (osteomyelitis), usually following pelvic surgery • Pelvic trauma or surgery • Sports-related injury or overuse • Spondyloarthropathies (spondyloarthritis), a group of inflammatory conditions
Interesting Facts • More common in males • Commonly found in Soccer • Slide Tackle with rotation • Extreme Hip Abduction, combined with concentric Hip Adduction, flexion/extension of the hips as well as jumps and twists of Bulls and Horses lead to Rodeo injuries
Age Groups In Which the Injury can Occur • It is most common in males ages 30 to 50
Signs and Symptoms • Pain in the lower abdomen or groin, lower thigh, testicles or hips • Tenderness at the symphysis pubis
Treatment • Rest, if related to sports injury or overuse • Antibiotics if an infection is present • Nonsteroidal-anti-inflamitory drugs(NSAIDs) or pain relievers • Physical Therapy • Surgery
How long will the athlete be out? • Usually as long as 4 to 15 weeks
Preventions & Precautions • Make sure to keep your groin and hip flexor flexible by stretching
