Joseph McCarthy and McCarthyism •Joseph McCarthy was the senator of Wisconsin. •He was a Republican and was trying to find an issue for re-election in 1952 and ended up choosing communism. •He is considered the most famous anti-communist activist. •McCarthyism is what his attacks without evidence became known as.
McCarthy’s Tactics Used Against Communists • False accusations with no evidence • He claimed to have a list of 50-200 suspects. • He only did his name calling in the Senate that way he had legal immunity and couldn’t be sued for slander.
McCarthy’s Downfall • Senator McCarthy accused the United States army of supporting Communism. This lead to a nationally televised investigation. • McCarthy lost the support of the public . • He was condemned of improper conduct and bringing dishonor to the Senate. • He died a broke man 3 years later of alcoholism.
J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI’s Beliefs •Hoover was the head of the FBI, and made it his crusade to prevent Communism in America. •The FBI believed they were the main protectors against subversions in America. •Before WWII Hoover believed that the FBI wasn’t aggressive so post war he made the FBI more aggressive.
Tactic of the FBI • The FBI lead to convictions of party leader, former government workers and a ring of atom bomb spies. • They quietly investigated allegations, but left punishment to the courts and others. • The FBI also authorized secret assistance in committees of Congress and had a counterintelligence operation.
The FBI Files • The FBI has over 10,000 files of citizens that their loyalty was questionable. • Most of these files were unwarranted and considered illegal invasions of privacy. • J. Edgar Hoover heavily guarded these files, but would leak information to allies, such as McCarthy.
