  5. “But the house on Mango Street isn’t what the way they told us at all.” “Bricks are crumbling in places, and the front door is so swollen you have to push hard to get in.”

  6. “Everyone has to share a bedroom…” “…Mama and Papa, Carlos and Kiki, me and Nenny.”

  7. “Each time it’d seemed there’d be one more of us.”

  8. “When we lived on Loomis… the Laundromat down had been robbed.”

  9. “You live there?” “The way she said it made me feel like nothing. I lived there.”

  10. “I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to.”
