Development of telerehabilitation application with designated consultation categories

This study aims to design and develop a tele-rehabilitation system with specific consultation categories, evaluating a bandwidth adaptation algorithm for usability in low-bandwidth environments. The system's effectiveness in various consultation categories was assessed, showing promising results for large-scale deployment in bandwidth-limited settings.

  2. Aim • Design and develop telerehabilitation (TR) system with customized consultation categories. • Evaluate novel bandwidth adaptation algorithm to ensure system functionality in narrow-bandwidth environments. • Relevance • TR systems that are usable under low-bandwidth network environments are rare.

  3. Method • Method for bandwidth adaptation was introduced. • Different consultation categories were identified based on TR session requirements. • Each category was formed with varying parameter settings: frame rate, compression quality, color information, cropping features, and spatial data extraction. • System was evaluated for minimum bandwidth required to be used successfully in TR session.

  4. Results • System performed effectively in each consultation category while the rehabilitation exercises were being performed. • Proposed algorithm adapted content quality and effectively utilized the network under constrained conditions. • Results of survey on video quality of system under low-bandwidth conditions were encouraging for large-scale deployment of the application.

  5. Conclusion • Experimental results and ground survey responses suggest that using the developed system in bandwidth-limited environments, such as rural areas in developing countries, may allow successful TR sessions with specialists in the city or even other countries.
