THERE ARE MANY SPECIES UNDER THREAT OF EXTINCTION ON THE EARTH TODAY
SPECIES BEEN THREATENED • 12,259* species are threatened to some extent, including mammals, birds, reptiles, insects and fish. • *this number is from the 2003 Red List, an annual report by the World Conservation Union.
ANIMALS AND PLANTS • A list of 800 animals and plants very close to being wiped out has been put together by researchers who want to highlight the danger they are in.
THE MAP OF EXTINCTION • They've put their information on a map showing the places around the world where the species are found. • Most of the 800 are only found in one place, largely in the tropics.
Endangered Animals • A species is called endangered when there are so few of its kind left that it could disappear from the planet altogether and become 'extinct.' • Extinct means an animal hasn't been seen in the wild for 50 years. • In total 762 plant and animal species are now recorded as extinct.
SUMMARY • 12.259 species are under some type of threat • 800 are about to be wiped out • 762 are already extinct • 50% of all species will be extinct by the end of the century
REASONS FOR THE THREAT • Most of the animals and plants are under threat because they could lose their habitat, as many jungles and forests are being cut down by farmers or loggers. • The say it's impossible to know or predict how long these species might have; but certainly within the next few decades, if these sites aren't protected, they will be gone.
REASONS FOR THE THREAT • Pollution, chopping down rainforests and building all affect animal habitats which means they have nowhere to live and nothing to eat. • Another big problem is humans introducing new plants and animals on to small islands. This can result in older species being wiped out. • Buying and selling some exotic animals for their skins like crocodiles is illegal in many places but people still do it. • Elephants are killed for their ivory tusks which are used for jewellery and medicine in some countries.
BUT THERE IS ANOTHER MORE IMPORTANT SPECIES UNDER THREAT OF EXTINCTION
There are many Christians out there, but not many Christ’s disciples
DISCIPLESHIP Who invented the concept?
DISCIPLESHIP • Jesus started it out. That was His main strategy to plant His Kingdom on the earth. • When He left heaven to come to this world He already had the plan which had been designed by the Trinity. • He could have come to the world with a big and sophisticated plan that would include things like: big meetings, buildings, an army under His own command, etc. • But He chose discipleship.
His Ministry Strategy After He was released to start His ministry these are the things He took care of: • He was baptized and filled and anointed by the Holy Spirit.
His Ministry Strategy 2. He prayed to the Father for directions to choose the disciples
His Ministry Strategy 3. He called His disciples.
Jesus Chose His Twelve Disciples And He went up on the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out the demons. (Mk. 3:13-15)
Discipleship Strategy • He appointed twelve disciples • To be with Him • To send them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out the demons
He Chose Them By Their Names These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. (Mark 3:16-19)
He Had a Strategy • To be with Him • To be with Him meant more than just meeting once a week in a service setting. • It meant to be with Him in real life and learn from Him in daily situations.
He Had Goals for Their Lives • To send them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out the demons. It was a specific goal that would empower them for the mission they were called to.
His Strategy Had a Purpose • They should make other disciples starting in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth. • Mat. 28;18-20 • Mark 16:15
TABLE TALK Was this commandment of Christ only for the 12 disciples or is it still valid for today and for us? Do you have a disciple? Or have you made a disciple?
MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS • IF WE DO NOT MAKE DISCIPLES WE ARE DISOBEYING A CLEAR COMMANDMENT OF CHRIST. • THE COMMAND IS FOR THE DISCIPLES, NOT FOR THE CHURCH AS AN INSTITUTION OR FOR THE CHURCH LEADERS.
Where are My Disciples? • Jesus knew His disciples had not understood His teaching about His death and resurrection • Jesus knew they would flee, hide, and even deny Him when things got worst. • Jesus knew Judas would betray Him • The disciples literally disappeared during the Calvary event • Jesus was not surprised by those facts • But still He felt forsaken during His suffering and death
Where are Christ’s Disciples Today? • Where are Christ’s real disciples? • Where are the full time and full life disciples? • Where are those called by Jesus who are willing and committed to carry His cross and follow Him? • Have them been wiped out from the face of the earth? • Or are they under threat of extinction?
Extinction? • In the animal world, extinct means an animal hasn't been seen in the wild for 50 years. • Have we seen disciples like those who followed Jesus in the wild of this earth for the last 50 years?
Where are You? In relation to the cross of Christ? Are you hiding from it? Are you denying it? Are you afraid of it? Are you ashamed of it? Are you under the threat of extinction?
What are the factors contributing to this threat? • The habitat: a decaying and corrupted world and ungodly values • The lack of proper food: the preaching and teaching of world-adapted Gospels (prosperity, comfortable, easy, uncommitted, cross-avoiding) • The lack of supporting community: religious and formal meetings with people sitting in the comfortable pews lacking the community of believers living out the Gospel in love and accountability.
What are the factors contributing to this threat? • The environment: • The ekklesia created by Christ is the environment to form and develop His disciples. • The church as Jesus designed and not as people have made of it. • The church that is committed to discipleship, modeling, accountability, fellowship, teaching, training, prayer, witnessing, carrying Christ’s cross.
Something has to be done! Let’s save the disciples species!
Let’s hold to the fundamental truths of a real community life and discipleship.
The Shepherd’s Heart STARTS NOW.
The Shepherd’s Heart Plan • It will be implemented in each cell: we will make disciples of Christ who will live like disciples of Christ in the world. • We will follow Christ’s example, which is the only biblical model to build a New Testament community.
The Shepherd’s Heart Plan • Each disciple will be encouraged to be a disciple and to make disciples (mentoring.) • Each Disciple will be encouraged to witness about Jesus Christ to the world with their own lives. • Each disciple will be encouraged to live like a Temple and an instrument of the Holy Spirit.
