PLUS • Core skills (often referred as LLN skills) • Learning • Numeracy • Oral communication (speaking and listening) • Reading • Writing • Employability skills • Initiative • Problem-solving • Planning and organising • Self-management • Teamwork • Technology What are foundation skills? • Digital literacy
Foundation Skills in units • A mandatory section in a unit of competency that describes the language, literacy, numeracy (LLN) requirements, together with employability skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria
Describing foundation skills in a unit: an example AURLTB003 Diagnose and repair light vehicle hydraulic braking systems PC 2.1 Braking system diagnostic tests are performed according to workplace procedures and work health and safety requirements.
The benefits This foundation skills section will: • provide clear and concise LLN and employability skill statements that relate directly to the unit • benefit industry by supporting foundation skill development • help trainers and assessors recognise particular learner foundation skill support needs
Practical exercise: Foundation skills Solid foundation to success
Foundation skills areessential to successful training outcomes
Write elements and performance criteria for: Change fuel filters Video
Which foundation skills are essential to unit? • Which employability skills? • Initiative • Problem-solving • Planning and organising • Self-management • Teamwork • Technology • Digital literacy • Which core skills? • Learning • Numeracy • Oral communication (speaking and listening) • Reading • Writing Video

Range of conditions Range statement
New range of conditionsVs previous range statement Workplace health and safety requirements may include: • protective clothing and equipment • use of tools and equipment • handling of material • use of fire-fighting equipment • first aid equipment May Work health and safety requirements must include: • procedures to manage and control brake dust and brake fluid. Must • Items in range of conditions: • linked to performance and knowledge evidence • clear requirements
ASA approach to ‘Range of Conditions’ section Related to job outcome, expands on meaning of performance criteria Optional field, but when in a unit its contents are mandatory Most units will have range of conditions, but not all Industry Skills Councils have different approaches to this section
Surplus content from the traditional unit’s Range Statements Content will be edited and available in Auto Skills Training Package companion volume Accessed through a hyperlink from the links section in the unit of competency or the assessment requirements http://www.asacompanionvolumes.com.au/ Companion volumes are a live and upgradeable resource
Assessment requirements • Performance evidence • Knowledge evidence • Assessment conditions
Performance evidence Identifies what a person must be able to demonstrate
Performance evidence Linked to a unit’s elements, performance criteria and foundation skills States volume (or frequency) of what learner must be able to demonstrate
Performance evidence Learner is required to demonstrate they can diagnose and repair a four wheel disc brake system. Assessor assesses that performance against elements and PCs, range of conditions and foundation skills Elements and performance criteria Assessor assesses learner performance against the performance criteria • Range of conditions • Assessor notes that there is a bold Italicised phrase in PC 2.1 re WHS requirements and that the Range of Conditions states that: • Work health and safety requirementsmust include: • procedures to manage and control brake dust and brake fluid. • Learner’s ability to do this must also be assessed as part of the PC. Foundation skills Assessor notes that there are a number of foundation skills the learner must demonstrate during their performance and builds this into his/her assessment tool. These skills will fall naturally out of the vocational task.
Knowledge evidence Identifies what a person must know to perform the work Is more prescriptive than before
Assessment conditions Identifies how assessment must take place • Are there any mandatory conditions? • What are the conditions under which evidence must be gathered? • Are there specific assessor requirements for this particular unit?
Assessment conditions: Benefits No ambiguities – ‘must’ not ‘may’. Clear information for trainers and assessors (and other end users) Consistent assessment Required resources clearly defined as minimum requirements
Knowledge evidence Putting it all together Performance evidence Foundation skills Range of conditions Elements and performance criteria Assessment conditions
Practical exercise: Performance evidence required in assessment
Performance evidence: what a person must be able to demonstrate to be judged competent
Performance evidence Linked to elements, performance criteria and foundation skills States volume and frequency
Performance evidence for new ‘Test, charge and replace batteries’
Practical exercise: Performance evidence Use the blank handout to write what you would expect to see as performance evidence and required resources for this unit
