Critical Thinking • What does it mean and why it is important? • How it applies to Higher Education
What is Critical Thinking? Being ‘critical’ does not necessarily mean being negative A way of thinking…( taking a step back) • Analysis, reflection, evaluation • Being: Open-minded, objective, understanding bias A way of processing information • Filter and decode ( and not to take things at face value) • Being: Curious, sceptical A practice Comparing different arguments, exploring evidence, forming your own point of view
Different points of view: The Unemployed ‘Instead of them going in every two weeks, these job advisers can bring them in every day if they want, if they think they are not getting out of bed in the morning’ ‘the language ministers used to blame the poor for their plight was cruder and fiercer than in Thatcher's day. You need to go back to Edwardian times to find ministers and commentators so viciously dismissing all on low incomes as cheats, idlers and drunks’
Critical thinking in everyday life You think critically all the time.. For example… • deciding not to buy a particular product • telling your friends why you like/dislike a film/book/piece of music • reacting to a news story www.bbk.ac.uk/mybirkbeck
Developing your Skills Critical thinking is relevant to all academic practices Note-taking : understand the argument first Find different points of view ‘London is a really unfriendly place’ ( strong statements needs support) www.youcantrustme.com (Start with the reading list; read as much as you can) Check your own assumptions Talk to your peers Take Courage !
Why Does it Matter? AC Grayling: The Unconsidered Life (You Tube video, 2009) “If you don’t reflect on your life, if you don’t consider it, if you don’t choose the values that you are going to live by then you are going to live according to somebody else’s choices, you are going to be like a football that they are kicking around (…)”
