The “Phony War” • Hitler’s invasion of Poland, the blitzkrieg, showed the world a new kind of fighting. • Used great speed and force. • France began to move its forces to the Maginot Line. • British forces landed on the northern edge of France and blockaded the German ports. • There was actual little action on the Western Front and it became known as a Phony War.

  3. The Soviets • The Soviets began to invade Eastern European countries and split them up with the Nazis.

  4. Scandinavia and the Low Countries • The Phony War ended with the invasion of Denmark and Norway. • The Germans were able to get help from collaborators, or people willing to help their country’s enemy. • Now Germany had access to the Atlantic Ocean for their submarine fleets.

  5. Scandinavia and the Low Countries • Winston Churchill becomes British Prime Minister. He had always opposed appeasement. • The Germans move to outflank the Maginot Line and are able to surround a great deal of French and British soldiers at the port of Dunkerque.

  6. Evacuation of Dunkerque • All available British ships were sent to Dunkerque to help evacuate the soldiers. • 338,000 men were transported back to England.

  7. The Fall of France • After Dunkurque, the French were too weak to defend itself. The Germans and Italians were able to defeat France. • The new French gov’t became known as the Vichy gov’t led by Phillippe Petain. • Germany now had control of France.

  8. The French Resistance • Under the leadership of French General Charles de Gaulle, a resistance movement began to take hold. • Its headquarters were to be set up in London. • Resistance fighters in France became known as maquis. • Were famous for their acts of sabotage.
