Presenter Scott Magers has over 36 years in the fire service. He is currently the Fire Chief of the Hillsboro Fire Department, in Hillsboro Oregon. He is an NFPA Fire Officer 4 and a graduate of the National Fire Academy. Chief Magers also serves as an Type 1 Incident Commander of one of the three Incident Management Teams for the Oregon State Fire Marshals Office. Passionate Leadership in the Fire Service

Pitfalls of Some Leaders • They can become a little full of themselves! • They are the smartest person in the room! • Do as I say not as I do! • They over promise and under deliver! • They just can’t stop talking! • Its all about them! • Being wrong is not an option! • They wont grow within the job! Qualities of Good Leaders • Surround yourself with good people or help the people you have be better. • They are not the most important person on the team! • Your rank is a title, not a definition of who you are as a person. • Realistically promise, over deliver! • Check you ego at the door! Qualities of Good Leaders • Provide a Vision and Direction! • Support your people they matter the most, but hold them accountable. • If you take care of them, the will take care of you. • Teaching and supporting will always be better than discipline. • The team gets the wins, you get the loses! • Sometimes its better to ask for forgiveness than permission! Qualities of Good Leaders • The most important member of your team is the person struggling the most. • Don’t be afraid to jump into the trenches and help your team be successful • They make the hard right decision and not the easy wrong one. • They show confidence publicly and worry privately Passionate Leadership in the Fire Service
Qualities of Good Leaders • Their success is measured by the success of those that work for them. You want your people to take your job when your done with it. • Do not let the nay Sayers stand in your way. • Follow the 40/70 rule • Recognize that when the hair on the back of their neck stands up it means something.
