Modern References To Dante’s Inferno • Pirates of the Caribbean • In the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Captain Jack states, that the deepest level of hell is reserved for traitors and mutineers. (“Dante Alighieri” Wikipedia) • JFK • In one of JFK’s speeches he states that the worst sinners in hell are the ones who cannot choose sides. He is referencing Dante due to his description of the people forced to wander in limbo. (“Quotation”) • Halo • In the Game Halo ODST, the character is sent to district 9, which is the coldest of the districts, which is a reference to Dante’s 9th level of hell.(“Dante Alighieri and”) • Inferno (the game) • The Game inferno is loosely based on the book, following the same basic path through the same hell which Dante described.(“Dante’s Inferno (the video game)”) • The song “Roll Right” by Rage Against the Machine • This song references inferno when it says “send them to the seventh level” when referring to people who commit violent crimes.(Dante Alighieri and”)
Inferno’s reception in the 1300’s • Dante’s inferno made him many political enemies • Due to placement of several powerful political members and church members into hell. • Caused many problems for him.
Affects of Dante’s Inferno • First led to his exile for 2 years, as well as a large fine. • Dante refused to pay his fine which led to his exile being extended to a life sentence. • Dante joins the white Guelphs in an attempt to overthrow the Pope. • The revolution fails, most are pardoned, but Dante is not. • Dante dies in exile
Affect Analysis • This harsh punishment shows that the Church not only disagreed with this version of hell, but also was offended by the placement of several powerful officials in hell. • Dante’s inferno brought about his punishment due to his public criticism of Powerful members of the church. • This shows that at this time the church was very much in control of how people lived their lives and had the ability to remove people who were willing to stand up against them.
