Minority-Based CCOP • Increase the availability of state-of-the –art cancer treatment and research to minority individuals within their own community • Proven track record for enrollment to NCI-sponsored studies • Joint efforts of several departments within the NJ Medical School
Cancer Services at University Hospital • Approximately 22,000 patient encounters were recorded for FY2009 • 2007 – 1132 newly diagnosed patients • Younger and more advanced stage of disease • 40% AJCC stage III/IV compared to 27% nationwide • Unusually high number of sarcoma, cervical, hepatic and head/neck carcinomas
Efforts to Address Barriers • Hiring bilingual staff • IMPACT NJ to develop a patient/family educational video • Patient Navigator Program
Future Directions • Hire staff • Open treatment and cancer prevention trials • Website • Develop additional recruitment strategies • Partner with community organizations
