Introduction to Surf Rock Surf Rock Originated in Southern California and began in the early 1960’s. It began as instrumental dance music with a medium to fast tempo, mostly by electric guitar and saxophone, and was pioneered by Dick Dale, followed by performers such as Duane Eddy and Link Wray. Another type of Surf Rock that came along after just instrumentals was Vocal Surf Pop including both surf ballads and dance music, most recognized by the Beach Boys. Instrumentals from the surf rock style that were played by a guitar reused in many of the films in the James Bond series, and influenced the music of many spy films of the 1960s. Surf music ended up influencing a few rock musicians later in the 1900’s, such as Keith Moon of The Who, East Bay Ray of the Dead Kennedys, and Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago.
The Facts Surf Rock has two strains, vocal and instrumental Jan and Dean started vocal surf music in 1959 with their hit “Baby Talk”, followed by another hit called “Surf City” These songs all contained high harmony vocals and Chuck Berry guitar riffs Soon after Jan and Dean came the Beach Boys Basically took the spotlight away from Jan and Dean
The Facts Continued In 1961, as surfing became much more popular on the West Coast, Dick Dale and the Del-Tones came out with a soundtrack, starting with “Let’s Go Trippin’” Dale was actually a surfer himself He developed a unique style of electric guitar playing the fused Middle-Eastern influences and staccato picking. Although it might not be accepted as a style of rock, it has influenced bands from the 70’s all the way to the 90’s, and even some today.
